4.0 swap

I have a 2000 Ranger 4x4 with a bad 4.0. Will a 2004 4.0 work?

No, 2001 and up Rangers had the 4.0l SOHC engines, no relation to the 1990-2000 4.0l OHV engines.

You could do full computer, wiring harness and engine swap, but not a simple swap, i.e. not plug and play.
2004 is also within the 1997-2004/5 years of the bad timing chains issue with the 4.0l SOHC so that work would need to be done before installing

The 4.0l OHV engines were very reliable, they did crack heads if overheated but not a big deal to repair.
While you could use any 1990-2000 4.0l OHV a 1998-2000 would be best match, same crank bolt pattern and fuel pressure.
But you can always swap flexplate/flywheels and intakes

4.0l OHV info by year changes here: Rebuilding The Ford 4.0L Pushrod V6, Doug Anderson, Automotive Rebuilder, April 2001
