Auto to manual swap
Auto to manual swap
I have a 2006 ford ranger and I’m wanting to do a auto to manual swap on it what all will I really need? And I’ve read on previous forums that it will confuse the computer by swapping to a manual trans? How do I get around this? Any help will be much appreciated.
Welcome to the forum.
Yes, 1985 and up vehicles with automatic transmissions needed computer to help determine shifting points, so that software is in all the computers for automatic vehicles, not a Ford thing.
When computer starts up it expects to see the automatic transmissions solenoids(electric parts inside an automatic trans), if it doesn't see them it will turn on the CEL(check engine light) and run in Safe or Limp mode because of the MAJOR problem, i.e. NO TRANSMISSION, lol
Computer is not confused, it "knows" there is no transmission.
You can drive it this way, will idle funny sometimes but will have power and be "normal" while cruising along
You can send your computer to a programmer, no I don't know one, and they can delete the automatic trans software, and also do a tune up for better performance.
$200-$400 I think
To do the swap you need an M5OD-R1(M5R1) manual transmission that MATCHES YOUR ENGINE and 2WD or 4WD must match as well
i.e. 2.3l engine trans won't fit 3.0l or 4.0l engine, and visa versa.
M5R1 is the "model" of the transmission not what it fits
If you have a 3.0l 2WD Ranger then you need to find a 3.0l 2wd M5R1, and it also needs to be 2001 and up, to have the correct Speed sensor
You also need the Flywheel and clutch set with Master cylinder
The brake/clutch pedal assembly
Shift boot and plate for the floor shifter
Clutch Neutral switch should be used but you can by pass this if you want, if pulling parts at wrecking yard then grab it, its plug and play on all Ranger
Also the steering column if you want to get rid of the column shifter, but that just looks, not "needed"
