Conversion from universal axle to cv?

I have a 96 ranger 4x4 with 5 speed and 4.0. It has universal axles and I pretty much have to rebuild the front end. It has a Dana 35. My brother said that I should convert it to CV axles because they are stronger and last longer. Does anybody know what is required parts wise to do this? Can I change it over easily?

I mean no disrespect at all to your brother.... But that is the most insane thing Ive herd in a while. U-joints are astronomically cheaper to replace than a CV axle assembly,
U-joints are serviceable, U-joints last longer, and U-joints are less prone to catastrophic failure (i.e snapping).

1996 4x4 Ranger could have either a Dana 35 or a Dana Hybrid 28/35, make sure of what you have by looking here: Ford Ranger 4×4 Front Axles: 1983-1997 : The Ranger Station

Yes, stay with u-joints, mine lasted 20+years, and no real benefit with CV joints just cheaper for Ford(and other car makers) to use these on assembly lines

Well, my brother had one that I took the axles out of and they were CV axles. Since mine supposedly has a broken axle and spindle (that is what the seller told me was wrong) as well as wear on pretty much everything. I am going to have to replace or buy all the bearings, suspension, steering, components and linkages to rebuild it and make it reliable. I was told CV would last longer and is stronger. I have decided to go with universal axles. Its simpler for me to order the right parts and get them faster. The local off road custom shop owner told me he has better luck with universal axles on trail jeeps. Apparently as soon as a boot gets ripped on the CV, then it will go out. He said that CVS would be better on the road.

how have your u joints held up? I’m working on my dana 35 and I’ve broken ears on both outer stubs. I’m learning for the first time that the whole shaft can be swapped for cv shafts? I had no idea. The stubs are not easy to find.

Locking this thread because CV axles do not go where u-joint axles went without some serious modification. The 1983-1997 front axles were not designed to accommodate the circumference of CV axle joints.
