Recently bought 04 ranger that hasn’t ran in a year
About a year ago my best friend passed away, and I just bought his 04 ranger. It hasn’t ran since April 2018. I tried to start it and it won’t turn over. I can hear the starter moving, but nothing else. I’ve replaced the spark plugs and the fuel filter, but I don’t know much about cars. So I don’t know where else to look, and I can’t afford to take it to tow it to a mechanic right now.
i was planning on emptying the fuel tank and replacing it with new fuel, same with the oil. Some people
habe told me to check out the ignition coil and replace it.
I was was hoping I can some help or insight on possible issues. Thanks in advance for your time.
EDIT: I forgot to mention it’s 2wd 4.0 L V6 SOHC

So is it cranking/turning over and not starting ? or is just the starter spinning?
Welcome to the forum
Sorry for the loss of a good friend, that is always hard
There are a few Mobile auto mechanics on Oahu, call them and ask how much for a diagnostic service call
If you do this, have them WRITE DOWN what they "think" the problem is and report that back here
Since your knowledge is limited in this area it will be hard for you to do the testing needed to diagnose a problem yourself
You can do a 50/50 test, it very simple to do and FREE
You do need a spray can of Quick Start(ether) which isn't free
You remove your air filter, may need a screwdriver
Under it you will see the big hole that is used to suck air into the engine, the big tube that runs over to the center of the engine
Spray about 5 seconds of Ether into this tube, count to 5
Then try to start the engine, you don't need to put air filter back in place
And you can spray and crank engine a few times to test it, no real limit for this test
If it starts and then dies, you have GOOD Spark and GOOD compression, but fuel is either no good or system is clogged up
Sitting for that long in a warmer climate can cause the gasoline in the fuel lines to evaporate and it leaves behind a gummy residue that prevents good fuel flow
If it doesn't start then you have NO Spark, maybe low compression but less likely
There is ONLY one sensor on newer engines that can cause No Spark, that's the Crank Position Sensor(CKP sensor), not to be confused with Cam sensor(CPS)
Crank sensors rarely fail, extreme long shot but not no shot at all
There are also a few fuses that can blow and cause a no spark
