How hard is it to change the ac pump on my 97 4.0
I have a 97 ford ranger with the 4.0 and the ac dosen't work was told I needed a new pump. Now my question is how hard it would be to replace the pump. Also does anyone know why my speedo quit working
Welcome to the forum
Not hard to change the Compressor on the 4.0l its at the top of the engine, but......................
When a compressor fails it will send metal filings out with the "freon" into the rest of the AC Pipes
If you put in a new compressor then these metal bits will come into the new compressor and cause it to fail..................
An AC shop can clean out the system(flush it) to make it safe to put in a new compressor
You need to install a new accumulator/receiver/drier and filter anytime an AC system is exposed to outside air, they are not expensive parts
You also need to put oil into the new compressor before its installed
You can buy "kits" that include all these parts and a new compressor
1997 Ranger has an electronic speedometer and odometer, are BOTH not working?
If BOTH are not working then its possible the speed sensor(VSS) on the transmission is unplugged or broken
On the drivers side at the rear of the transmission you will see 2 wire connector for the VSS, make sure its plugged in
Unplug it and plug it back in and see if speedo/odo work again
If not then you will need to pull it out to check if gear is stripped, whole unit looks like this: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...s_withgear.JPG
While its unlikely, the driven gear can strip
If gear looks good then you will need to get a new VSS sensor and move that gear over to it
If just the speedo is not working and the odometer is, then problem is in the instrument cluster, it is easier to just swap the whole cluster with a used one, 1996-2003 will work in a 1997 Ranger, if cluster is from a V6 Ranger then its plug and play, if from a 4cyl Ranger then you need to change a ground wire on the cluster wiring to make tachometer work correctly
