Welcome to the forum
What YEAR Ranger and what engine?
Always good to include that info with a question
I am guessing 1995 4.0l?
Around 1988 and up Ford changed to an oil pressure switch, so on/off
It GROUNDS the gauge in the dash when oil pressure is above 5psi, "on", gauge will then show in the "normal range"
Oil switch should be on drivers side of 4.0l engine just above oil pan towards front
It should have a Dark Green/white stripe wire plugged into it
Disconnect that wire
Then use a jumper wire from that wire to Battery Negative(ground)
Turn on key, engine off
Oil gauge should now show in "normal" range, this means wire to gauge and gauge is OK
If gauge is still 0 then problem is the wire or the gauge
If gauge and wire test as OK then oil switch or its ground is the problem
The oil switch uses it metal threads screwed in to the metal pipe as its ground, so these threads MUST HAVE bare metal contact to engine block, a GOOD GROUND
So NO TAPE
These are NPT threads so they are tapered and seal when they are tighten, new one might come with white sealant at the top of the threads, that's fine as long as there are some BARE threads to make the ground connection
The oil passage and pipe can get clogged up
Remove pipe and make sure its clear, rinse it out
UNPLUG COIL PACKs 4 wire connector, so NO SPARK and NO START!!!
Put a pan down under oil switch hole in block
Turn over engine just for 2 seconds or so, that should push out any obstruction in the blocked passage for the oil switch
It will be easy to see that oil came out the hole, lol, use a BIG pan
Clean threads and reassemble
If Grounding the green/white wire didn't get oil gauge off 0 then you will need to pull out the cluster and test from there
