2001 Ford ranger 4.0 engine swap/upgrade HELP

Hello, i just picked up a 2001 ford ranger with 225k, 1 owner, and it is in new condition, the original owner took care of it like a baby, but the timing chain went out.
so my question is I wanna get a newer engine, but don't know what year will work, I read that the explorer and mountaineer engines will work, but what year or what year the ranger engine will work, and what would I need to swap from the old engine over. Also, the newer engines have no EGR correct? so do I swap over the old system also? sorry if its a dumb question that's been asked before lol

Welcome to the forum

2001-2011 4.0l SOHC engine from a Ranger or Mazda B4000 will work
Yes, Explorer/Mountaineer 4.0l SOHC will work as well
They all have EGRs

Things to change when "new" engine is out, rear main seal
The 2 long chain tensioners, do this every 100k miles, can be done with engine in the vehicle
Check thermostat housing for cracks and if it has 2 sensors or just one, your 2001 needs 2, so swap housings

I found a 2007 explorer engine with 4x4, that one will work correct ? I would have to change out oil pan, and Manifold-injectors etc correct ?

You would need to change thermostat housing to get 2 sensors, there is a 3rd party METAL housing available now, good upgrade
Oil pans should be the same although changing gaskets is not a bad idea

Injectors would be OK as long as they used the same connectors, same for all the electrical plugs on the engine, Ford doesn't publish changes in connectors anywhere, they can change from round to square to rectangle, lol, so you need to keep old engine around to swap out parts as needed to match the 2001 harness

If you end up taking off the intake I would also put in a new Knock Sensor, as it can be hard to get at and a known issue

Do you have a link to the housing by any chance ? And it’s fine that mine is 2x4 and the other one is 4X4 ? Anything else I should be aware of ? I’ll swap out the manifolds and injectors from the old engine, guy did a lot of services and replaced a lot of new parts on the old engine.

Ebay listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/223990824697

Must have the 2 sensors, there is also a 1 sensor model

Change the rear main seal
If its an automatic make sure you know how to SEAT the Torque Converter
Google: How to seat a torque converter
Its the same on all automatics, not a Ford thing, it's an automatic transmission thing
Watch the 2 min video, do it wrong and your automatic will need a FULL rebuild, $$$$
