Gear Shifter Vibration on 2005 2.3 2wd

Hello All,

I was driving home on a rough interstate and my gear shifter started to vibrate while at highway speeds in 5th gear.

It just started today and was persistent for the trip home which took about 2 hours.

I was researching and it seems that it may be the slip yoke dampener failure.

The truck is old and it may have failed. Can I test it in the vehicle? I have had u joints replaced maybe 3 years ago.
I was thinking that it may be the shifter bushings but I changed that out a few years ago too and I only put around 6k on the truck a year.

I did check the fluid level and we are good there. I also had a recent clutch job and replaced the transmisssion mounts, engine mounts.

If the yoke has failed I will have it repaired by the driveline shop that I like so they can balance it again.

Do I sound reasonable or am I missing something?

Thanks,

BOB

I drove it again today and the noise was not as bad but still there. I was not going as fast. There seems to be some up and down travel on the gear shifter.

Also, I did have a bit of clunk when deceleration and coming out of gear. I hope that I do not have an internal issue with the transmission. It has 123k very gentle miles.

I will take the shifter apart and look at that this weekend. Do those shifting forks go bad?

Thanks,

BOB

Hello All,

I did inspect the slip yoke and the dampener has failed.

I did look at the shifter bushings and the pins have some wear on them so I will have them replaced too.

I could replace the yoke with a new one or just remove the dampener and have the old one rebalanced.

Any ideas?

Has anyone just live with out the dampener?

Thanks,

BOB

Hello All,

I brought my driveshaft to the driveshaft shop in Phoenix. He said that they can just remove the rubber parts that are still there and rebalance the shaft.

Alls good in the world.

If you need work in phoenix here they are. Ask for Orin.

I drove the truck and all seems good with the world. He said that on old trucks he removes those dampers as they like to brake off and cause a bunch of damage.

Hello All,

Just a follow up on the driveshaft repair.

I took it to the driveline shop and had new u joints put in and rebalanced, I did not replace the damper. All is good in the world except I did not use new bolts and must have messed up the install as the driveline started to develop a bit of slack. I ordered new bolts and put it all back to together and torqued them down with a criss cross pattern and she is nice and tight again. Not sure if it is mandatory to put new bolts in as many reuse the old bolts, but I did not want to take any chances.

Thanks for all the help.

Bob
