1998 2.5 Idle issues
1998 2.5 Idle issues
So I’ve been having this issue for a while now and posted a couple times and RonD has helped a bit but haven’t seen him in a while.
But this truck has been stumbling and stalling and idle dropping at random points mainly when the truck is at operating temp. It’s worse when the AC is on but still same issue. The rpm’s gradually decline to 600 randomly and sometimes the just drop to 100 and come back up. Now, I took this truck for a drive today, got the engine warm, I wasn’t going faster than 60 mph. And I went to slow down to about 15 mph and then the idle dropped for a second and came back up, and when I went to accelerate in second gear on flat asphalt the engine started to go and then started bogging down while I was hitting the gas pedal, now I wasn’t flooring it because I know it makes it worse (this isn’t the first time this has happened) so I kept it halfway to the floor and it eventually started extremely slowly starting to accelerate.
Does anyone have any ideas? I’ve replaced nearly all my sensors. The only ones that haven’t are the MAF and Upstream O2 sensor. The downstream on the cat was replaced when I had the exhaust replaced. But the upstream and manifold was never replaced. The Upstream sensor is the original sensor.
I am begging someone to have something. Even just “I don’t know” is better than nothing.

I would start by checking for codes from the OBD2 port. Are you familiar with how the auto parts stores will check for those for you?
How many miles on the truck? Your upstream EGO sensor is likely past it's service life, though I don't think that's related to your problem. Are there earlier threads with comments from RonD about this issue here in the ranger-forums? If so, which forum, this one or the 2.3L and 2.5L I4 engines forum? That forum would likely get you better responses. I'm a 2.9L V6 owner, so my responses will be general EEC-4 or EEC-5 related.
