Fuel pump Troubleshoot '89 Ranger

Hello -

I have an '89 Ranger with the 2.3, 78,000 miles on it that has been in storage for the last 8 years, has not been started in the last 2 years. Got it home and when turning the key to on position I do not hear the fuel pump kick on, but I can hear relay click under the hood and I believe I hear another click under the bed of truck.

In searching the forums I've found some vague testing methods so I began checking wiring. Here is what I've done so far on a fully charged battery:
  • Fuel pump relay fuse is good at power junction box - checked all other fuses and verified power on both sides of terminal
  • Black and yellow wire tested positive
  • Red wire tested positive when key is on
  • Inertia switch has power both sides tested during the 2 seconds on time
  • Found NO power on the orange and light blue wire on fuel pump relay however I'm not sure if this needs to be tested during the 2 second on time or not ????? If so, then it appears the relay is bad???
Does anyone have a good wiring schematic and process of testing? From what I've got so far, I believe the relay is bad for fuel pump as it's not showing power on the orange and light blue wire however, I have not tested that during the 2 second window after key is on.....Maybe I need to recheck?

Further testing today - it appears the pump may be out. I was able to test the orange and light blue wire while ignition was turned on, it did light for 2 seconds then went out.

I tested the black and pink wire in the loom along frame rail about 2 feet from the pump and verified that it had signal for 2 seconds as well when key turned on then went out. I also checked the ground wire along driver side fender well, all clean and appear good.

Any other checks I should do before pulling the bed and replacing pump?

Got a replacement fuel pump as when I tested the pink and black wire within about 2 feet of the top of the tank. It was getting a signal so I went ahead and bought a fuel pump and put that in today.

I believe it was the original pump that I took out the strainer sock was detached from the pump and laying in the bottom of the tank so I fished that out. It only had probably half a gallon of old fuel in there that I couldn’t get out so I added 5 gallons of 91 octane with Lucas fuel stabilizer treatment. Prime the pump got it running.

It is running very rough and I’ve got a knock noise that sounds like detonation not a Rod knock by any means it’s definitely missing. So I’m going to start changing all of the plugs and wires.

I wouldn’t think that the computer would have altered or lost any of its air fuel ratio programming or spark timing. I guess I don’t know much about it, but it hasn’t had battery power to it in probably five years so I suppose it’s always possible?

Any ideas on what I should do besides changing plugs wires?
