searched, 99% of the posts had zero to do with what im asking....

driving home this morning from KSU through a construction zone and watching my change in my cup holder bouncing up and down, i figure its time to get some new shocks for the truck...

bliestens i know are good, but they dont work with a 2wd xlt and theyre kinda pricy so those are out of my choices for the most part...

im 90% on road so i want to get something that will ride smooth, but still be rugged.....

so far im looking at these two....

also which wouild be better to replace first, the front or rear?

 

Im not sure on what you shoudl get but i would do the fronts 1st, because the back will be a breeze...

you own a 99 truck if your replacing them do them all

 

I run the es9000's. If a smooth ride is first priority skip these shocks. It is deffinantly not as smooth a ride at the stock shocks.

 

i probably will depending on the price...


krum, i think the way the numbers work is that the higher the number, the stiffer they are, but im not 100% sure...

 

I love my Rancho RSXs, but definitely not a car-like ride.

 

I have Gabriel Ultras. They aren't near as smooth as the stockers, but not so stiff that you can't stand it. Also over large bumps and potholes you don't feel like the truck is going to loose it's footing.

For your truck the RS5000 will be fine. Thats what we just put on the sport trac and all the other vehicles that we have owned. You wont replaced them again.

 

any idea of how the procomp es3000s are? would the lower number mean theyre softer?

 

i have the rs9000 5 speed and you can make any kind of ride you like soft hard there really great shocks

 

i belive you are right about the numbers on the pro comp's, but not possitive.

any help would be great on those procomps because i can get four for 100$, but its a limited time thing and im not sure how long its for....

 

The procomps number refer to the type of shock not nec. the ride softness..

es1000 = hydro shock
es 3000 = cellular gas
es 9000 = high pressure gas.

Thats from memory but I am 99% sure its right.
If you have the cash I'd recommend the edlebrock Performer IAS but they are
about 75$ each.
On a budget get monroe Sensatrack.. rancho rebadges them for one of their shocks..
I forget if its the 5000 or RSX

I may be selling a brand new set of IAS mono tubes for the rear soon but they are for a 4x4.

 

I have a 99 XLT also (yea yea is 4wd but anyway) and I had BOTH those shocks on my truck.

They are both very stiff. The road ride sucks. And they work well offroad.

If you are going to be driving more street, I would step it down to a 3000, or even 1000.

If you want a nice firm offroad shock, either one will work great.

PS.. Little bit of info, both shocks are made by the same company. In automotive shocks there are really only three shock manufacturers, Gabriel Monroe and Bilstien. Most all shocks are built by either Gabriel or Monroe, I foget who makes these, but the Pro Comps are just rebadged Rancho's. Anyway, I'm sure somebody else will be able to fill in the holes that I left.
