Ok I have a 2002 XLT 4.0 my problem is when I go out and try to start my truck after sitting awhile or first thing in the morning. I have a hard time getting it to start. I put the key when I turn it to start it take a few more seconds than normal for it to start. If I back off and try the to start the 2nd time it starts no problem. It just the first time it wants to take awhile to start. This just started happening after I had my fuel filter changed. Anybody else have this problem. any feed back would be great. Thanks in advance

 

hi,if this has only started happening since changing the filter,maybe the filter is faulty,could have collapsed inside and be partially blocking outlet to engine.just a thought!

 

Try changing the filter once more to see if its the problem.

 

yeah, it sounds like the filter, if changing that don't work try some fuel line cleaner.

 

Ok thanks guys I'll change filter and let you know if that was the problem. If I still have problem I'll try fuel line, injector cleaner.

 

I told everyone the other day my problems of my truck taking anywhere from 10-15 seconds to start in the morning or after it sat for a few hours. This started after I changed my fuel filter. Well the fuel filter was changed again yesterday. ( I had my mechanic change this because I read about guys on here having trouble changing their fuel filter I didn't want to mess with it) what he found out was that it was slightly leaking gas. He said that the line were tight on the fuel filter so he couldn't figure out why it was leaking. After he called NAPA to make sure the part numbers were correct he decides to measure the metal line,fittings, openings
(or what ever those things are called coming off of the filter) and he discovered that one was out of spec slightly larger causing it to slightly leak gas. So my truck is fixed and running fine for now.

 

NOW I know what is wrong with my truck... mine has been doing almost the same thing, maybe not as long before it starts, but close. Took it into Ford the other day and they said the fuel pump was going bad: I read this and went out and crawled under my truck and sure enough a slight leak at the filter. I kept thinking it started doing it same time I had my oil and filters changed a couple mths ago when it was too freakin cold for me to do it myself. Thanks for the heads up!

Sort of a bump on this...

But this same thing has been happening to me for the last 4 week sor so..

Changed my fuel filter and its still doing it (as of 2 days ago) So I'll probably check the pump tomorrow before work.


I try startign it up after its been sitting for a while, and it will turn over, but sits at like a 100 rpm really rough slow idle and I can tell its having a hard time starting up.. after it dies, and I try the second time.. it fires right on up.

Since I am assuming this is the fuel pump.. how much do they usually run and are they hard at all to replace, like.. any special tools needed?

 

T55 and either a ratcheting breaker bar or an air impact/ratchet if you are removing the bed for access. Soak the threads with PB Blaster from underneath.

You can confirm the fuel pump's checkvalve is bad by turning the key to Run and letting the fuel pump prime, then to Off and repeat 3x. Then crank. If it starts right up, bad checkvalve. Personally, I'd just adapt my starting method (I'm cheap).
