Best 4 banger besides the Ranger

fanatism aside .... which 4 banger gives you the best bang for your buck ?

I have a 3.0 V6 and with gas prices where they are I've started to think on replace it.

the 2.3 duratech is the best of the 4cyl. i think it only has 10 hp less than the 3.0 and people report millage around 25

I wouldn't say duratec is the best, but makes more power, i thought the dohc's got better than 25 MPG too, heck i get 25-26.5 MPG daily in my 95 2.3 sohc and occasionally better. And i wouldnt say i drive slow. There are plenty of sohc 2.3 limas withstanding the test of time, racking up hundreds of thousands of miles with only the basics. Bang for the buck, id say sohc 2.3. w/ 5 Speed. I prefer my 2.3-4cyl over a v6 3 or 4 liter, not just for fuel economy but longevity.
Im not speaking bad of other engines just my opinion.
Puntadigital what MPG's does your 3.0 get?

Subarus boxer 4 has a lot of power when matched with the turbo.

But if acura uses the B16/b18 vtec in the RSX then that wins, 210 N/A hp is great for a 4cyl

Mazda3 hands down. Gets close to around 30mpg with the 2.3 and is running close to 160hp. Also has a 2.0 with almost 150hp that avg's 35mpg.
