If the system has air in it, this will keep it from disengaging. You can try bleeding the system, but the way the master cylinder is mounted, it is

Yes, the master cylinder is mounted on the firewall, and the slave cylinder is inside the bell housing. One way I've heard that is an effective way of bleeding the system is to remove the c-clip in the back of the master cylinder and purge the system there. Make sure the reservoir is full, and doesn't run dry when this is done.
Mine was a leaking slave cylinder.
Had to replace it and no trouble since.
It is a pain, but; can be done yourself.
