have you checked the fluid yet?
level/condition..

the directions should be on the dipstick, should be running. some cars require you be in park, others say to be in neutral..

you'll know if its burnt when you smell it. but the level i think would be a bigger cause, I'm not too experienced in autos yet.

I had a similar problem like that with my 96 ranger. It would slip every time going into
2nd gear then be fine. Dealer replaced trans twice. This happened after I did a fluid change each time.

Sounds like the common 5r55e 2-3 shift flare. Search for it.
Some people have had success replacing one of the shift solenoids.
But first flush the fluid and see what it does.
A year or two ago a company made a run of these solenoids to help fix the problem, and gave away solenoids on explorerforum.com. Actually they paid people $100 to test them and review them. You might want to try tracking them down.
