Have a 2000 ranger with an automatic transmission that the indicator lays way to the right side and does not move. I don't have a manual, can someone give me an idea of what has gone to crap and talk me through on how to get to the indicator needle and fix it?

 

Most likely the wire has come off the column. Worst case is its broken.

Bare minimum you will need to pull the knee board , the metal plate behind it, the radio bezel. cluster bezel/trim, and drop the column. You may need to pull the cluster too.

I can get pics for reference if you want. I have a column sitting around.

yo dont have to pull the column to pull the cluster, but you need to check that cable and make sure it didnt come off or isnt broken

Wow....I've never seen such a simple fix turn into such a big deal like this one.

There is an adjustment wheel on the cable that moves the indicator needle. Simply turn the wheel to get it in the right position.

You do have to remove the knee board, metal plate, radio bezel, and dash panel to get to it. I'd recommend replacing the stock lights with LED's while you're in there.
