What will happen.....

What are the pros and cons for upping my tires from stock 255/70/16s (30.1 x 10) to the taller 265/75/16s (31.6 x 10.4)?

Looks aside....I want to know how will this alter my mpg, speedo, power, daily driveability, etc. going to the 1 1/2" larger diameter tire?

Should I just go for the tamer 265/70/16s (30.6 x 10.4) instead? They're going to get bigger, but 'm not getting new wheels or BL so the 265/75s will be my largest tire option.

you can run 285x75x16 with no problems stock.

speedo will be slightly slower speed. driving and ride prob will be better. power hardly noticeable

I went from 245/75/16 to 265/70/16 and didnt notice any loss in power. Now did it affect my mpg in any noticable fashion.

Driveability wise? Well the bigger tire offers a larger contact patch with the pavement...

So I take it you guys didn't start getting 22 mpg with a couple bump-ups in tire size, huh? Dang it!

My mileage changed a little when I went from stock to 32's, but nothing I'd complain about. Go with the bigger tires, you'll be glad you did.

Do not get anything smaller then a 265/75/16.

I went from stock tires to 285/75/16 and then to 295/75/16 and my gas mileage hasnt suffered buy maybe a little bit. I average 17.5 with 60city/40highway.

I'll probably go with the 265/75/16s. The 285s worry me about wheel well rub in the front. That's a big tire for stock suspension.
And Jake...295s....holy moly...are you stock????

Will definitely read reviews for wet traction tires when I get 'em....stock Wranglers are pretty bad in the rain.

I'm pretty convinced on the 265/75s....now what tires should I shod. Hmmmm, I want the look of mudders, the ride and quiet of car Michelins, and the price of inner tubes...lol

i have it narrowed down to two when i upgrade. either a 265-70r16 or a 265-75r16. both of which are close to 31. i think goodyear makes the mt in both those sizes.

i upgraded to 245's from 225'srecently and it improved my mileage on both ends....but i also drive like a geezer.
i went from 20 city and 25 highway to about 22 city and 27 highway
with an average from 21 mpg with 225's now its around 23 mpgs

and my speedo isn't really off until i get above 50 or so....then its way off

my speed0 will say i'm doing 70 when i'm actually doing 82

My tire chart shows that my stock 255/70s are 30.1" tall and the 265/75s are at 31.6" That looks like quite a jump in size. Am I going to kill my fuel economy going 1 1/2" bigger in diameter?

The 265/70s are 30.6" so I know a 1/2" isn't that much to worry about, but 1 1/2" is a lot.

Helpful tool:

Tire size calculator

Pretty simple. Put in your old and new tire sizes, and it will tell you how off the speedo will be.

Travis...that is a pretty cool tool. It confirms my chart's sizes, but it also gives the circumference differences and the number of revolutions per mile. I used it to figure how many more miles a larger tire will last, since it revolves less per mile. If I go 50k miles on my 255/70s, then I should see the exact same wear (all things being equal) on the larger 265/75s at 52,668. Not setting the world on fire, but it's helpful in justifying the larger cost. And my speedo will be off 3.2 mph (slower) at 60.....that's good to know.

thanks for that chart. much better then the one i had.
if i go from 255/70-16s to 265/75-16s, there is a 5.3% difference. at 60 i'll be going 63.2.
if i go from 255/70-16s to 265/70-16s, there is a 1.8% difference. at 60 i'll be going 61.1.

I went from 245/75/16 to 265/70/16 to 32x11.5x15

about 2 inches taller than stock. no rubbing issues except for a bolt on the drivers side which holds on my aftermarket oem mudflap.

i also have no lift. at all
