I got a fault code 214 during driving today. It came on and off intermittently. Not sure what that means "Cylinder identification circuit failure". As far as the truck goes, operation seems normal, starting right up (cold / warm), idling fine (no rough idle or stalling), run normally like before. After I got home, I reset the code and drove around the blocks with no issue. Checked code again and did not re-occur. I am thinking it's a crankshaft position sensor. Please advise.
Thanks in advance.

Its the Cam(CMP) sensor, 1994 Calif vehicle has Cam sensor as well as crank sensor, 1995 and up all had cam sensors
Crank sensor can only tell when 1/4 and 2/3 are at TDC, can't tell which is which
Cam sensor can ID all 4 cylinders, so is use as Misfire detector and for injector timing
It is a 2 wire VR sensor, read AUX gear on timing belt
VR(variable reluctance) sensors generate their own voltage, AC volts, 0.5vAC to 8vAC based on the RPM of the gear
RonD, mine looks like this below, a little different than yours. Yes, it is plugged in. Do you think the sensor or the whole camshaft gear is bad? Just wonder what I should replace if problem returns.

I thought distributor hole was removed in 1992 2.3l blocks, in any case, do this:
Unplug that cam sensor's wires and see if you get the 214 code to come back
If so you will know code was from that sensor
Plug it back in and clear the code
Not sure, but I think it would best to replace the whole unit, synchronizer and sensor
That's the 3.0l models, it had a bushing issue
Not sure on the 2.3l, they did have distributor gear issues if memory serves, and synchro uses same gear setup
