the 2.3 duratec that Ford has out in there Focus and Rangers is hard to beat. I've read on here members getting 25+mpg easy with them.

In the middle of 2001, Ford changed over from the POS 2.5 to the 2.3 duratec. About 97-2001 is when they had the POS 2.5

I have a 2.5 and hate it, some members on here have had good luck with it, I don't see how they did. I don't reccommend the 2.5 at all!

I'd say go with the 2.3 Duratec -Mike-

the reason you have had no luck with the 2.5 is that you have an auto tranny, they shift way too soon for the engine and loose too much power in inefficiancy. The manual tranny makes a world of difference with the any of the 4-cyl engines.

The recommendation to go with an 01-up duratec 2.3 is a good one though for the gas mileage and power that the DOHC engine has. Where it's been out for 6 years now the trucks with them have started to drop in price and any of the bugs when introducing a new engine have been worked out by now although I will admit the old LIMA 2.3 and 2.5 are indestructable...

I have a 2.5L 5 speed and it has been good to me. I get around 22 city/highway for gas mpg and as far as power, it isn't the most powerful thing, but it wasn't designed for speed.
