1991 Ranger Trouble starting cold - ignition switch?
Hey there folks,
My 1991 ranger with a 2.3 has been giving me some issues since the weather has been getting colder.
When I turn the key, she doesn't start. The engine doesn't turn over. My lights, dash, vents, etc. all turn on, and after a second or 2 I get a very very faint single click (sounds like its coming from the center of the console/under the hood..ish. Hard to tell, its VERY quiet.) I'm quite sure the click is not coming from the fender solenoid. I had that problem in the summer and the click was much louder and easy to tell where it was coming from. That issue resulted in a new starter and hasn't given me any problems since.
If I sit and turn the key enough times, it will eventually fire right up. However the other night this meant probably 75 attempts over the course of a half hour. (At midnight of course, freezing my tail off while I just wanted to get home from work lol.) The two times I've had it out since, same deal. But this time only 10-15 tries were necessary.
When it decides to turn over, it fires right up no problem. No hesitation, no slow cranking or anything. This is leading me to believe that there is a contact somewhere that is not in good shape. I've read a few things saying that a bad ignition switch can have worn contacts that don't like the cold.
Does this sound right? Anyone had a problem similar to this?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers
