Icon5 93 Ranger idle issues w/ rich exhaust

Hey guys Ive got a problem on my hands. My 93 XLT 5-speed has been having issues while running here lately and i am stumped with diagnosing the problem.

Here's the list:
-Exhaust is running rich w/ no color to the smoke
-The check engine light comes on after the engine has been warmed up (when i hop in the interstate) a few times it never comes on during a trip.
-About 3 minutes of running the truck's idle seems to drop then i hear a click and it catches back up to proper idle.

Today the engine seems to constantly drop idle and catch back up when in neutral at any point of driving. When the RPM's catch back up you hear a click as if some component under the hood like a sensor is kicking in to correct the problem. it clicks again when the RPM's dip back down.

As far as the idling problem is concerned i looked around the forums and it seems this IAC valve may be the culprit.

Any opinions/help would be greatly appreciated!

the clicking your talking about almost sounds like the A/C compressor.

Yeah, after checking under the hood thats about the general area it sounded like it was coming from.

Also I had replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter and alternator here these past couple of months. It seems like if it isnt one thing its the other. ive had both of those components completely fail on me.

I was hoping the fuel pump would fix the issue but apparently it hasnt...

your check engine light is probably on b/c your 02 sensors have gone bad have you replaced your spark plugs or spark plug wires that could help your problem.
