96 Ranger, Speedometer not workin

Hi guys, I recently bought a 1996 Ranger XLT 4 cylinder 2wd. It has about 144xxx miles on it and the other day I was cruising on the highway and the cruise, speedometer and odometer all quit working. I just replaced the rear abs sensor (mine didn't have the VSS) but that didn't seem to do anything. I was wondering if you guys had any ideas as to what the problem would be. The check engine light's on so I'm going to go and get that scanned soon too. If there's another post about this already, let me know because I couldn't find it. Thanks,
Connor

Bad speed sensor. Sensor is in the side of your transmission.

Would that require pulling my transmission apart then? I'm just curious so that I know what I'm getting into here. Thanks

Its just bolted (i think) on the side of the transmission. Look at where your shifter cable connects to the transmission. I think its on the drivers side. There is about a 3 x 4 inch electrical switch that the cable goes to (neutral safety switch). To the right of that (closer to the rear of the vehicle) you have your speed sensor. It will be like a quarter size diameter cylinder looking thing with a small bracket being held in by a small bolt. If you have any questions just take a picture of the side of your transmission or what you think the sensor is and I will let you know.

*******edit you will only have the neutral safety switch if you have an automatic
