99 ranger will not start again

two weeks ago i turn the key and nothing, i mean nothing happens. hours later the wrecker pulls up in the driveway and it magically starts and has been fine for three weeks. today it wont start again. turn the key and there is no revving at all. there is a relay in the fuse/relay block that is clicking fast. i found another relay right under the glove compartment that is also clicking fast. a couple of times while attemping the start it, I heard a single click/pop sound that might of been the starter. i have read about the cable going to the starter might be corroded inside. i was told to short out the solanoid and the starter to check to see if it spins. i am a newbie here so go easy on me. is it safe to short out these parts? if so, please explain how to do this. ideas?

update

after reading alot about a ranger not starting I found that most of them are able to crank the engine. mine does not crank at all. the starter doesnt make any sounds except for the couple of times it made a little pop sound. i am thinking about the 12+ cable form the batt to the starter because alot say it gets corroded inside. please help

tap on the starter with a hammer while someone tries to start it.. if it starts... you need a new starter.. if it doesnt check your grounds and the electrical system.

i fixed it !!!!!!!

the shop that i took it to two weeks ago said i had low fuel pressure out of the fuel pump and said that was the problem, no doubt. that would of been 575$ and i said i dont think so. the ran diagnostics for two days and that is all they could say was wrong.

THE FIX: i was going to clean the clamps and cables and the positive just popped right off of the terminal. the clamp had corroded so bad that there was only a very very thin strip of metal left on what use to be a thick clamp. 3$ later and a bit of my time, i replaced it and the truck started right up. no clicking, no popping and no spending 575$

SCREW THE PROFESSIONALS ( at least this one )

i cant believe that wouldnt of been the first thing they would of checked.

WTF ????

i had a similar issue, my truck would die on me on the road and then suddenly start back up. New terminal clamps and my truck has been fine since

Heck man, Last april I took a 3000 mile trip to Casper Wyoming. It was rough. Got stuck in 6 foot snow drifts, 50 MPH winds...IN APRIL.

To beat it all of, My left rear wheel cylinder went out, lost all my break fluid...long story short...300.00 for a 12.99 Part...lol

fast clicking or nothing at all eh? Or a bad connection like you said.

sounds like a battery, how old is it?

I've had mine screw with me a few times, it'll crank and crank and crank but no start.. so i go to work, come home at the end of the day with tools to diagnose it and it starts right up.. Its done that twice to me.
