code scanner

alright, i have a 198 2.3 L so, is there somewere to plug a scanner into, and if so what kind of scanner is it, i havn't seen any kind of port so thats why i'm asking, and now i have a stranger issue that i want to scan for.

i believe yours is OBD1. connector should be next to the fuse panel under the hood.

For 1994 and earlier, the scanner would need to be marked for OBD or OBD-I, not OBD-II.

However, a scanner is not necessary before OBD-II started for Rangers in 1995. OBD code pulling techniques

yeah i know about using a test light, but i don't know how the codes line up with light

ok i know you can't use a code scanner or a re not suppose to be able to pull codes unless the CEL is on but can you get the codes with a test light if the CEL isn't on, cause it never stayes on, like yesterday morning it was only on when i had my fot on the gas, but then stopped when i got to school, then no CEL that afternoon and night, or this mornigh untill i got to the school then it came on steady. but who knows if it will be on later.

Yes you can pull codes even if the CEL is not on. Even if the light goes off...the code is still stored.

This, pull the codes and find out whats up with your engine.

this is the best site i could find out how to do a self check without an OBD1 tester, but i hwave no idea where the self test imput is, any ideas
