Icon5 HELP!! 87 Ranger running too rich. HELP!!!!!!!

My 87 Ranger is running rich. I'm getting 12 mpg, and it barely runs. When you first start her up, she will stall 3 or 4 time, unless you keep your foot in the gas. Then when you’re driving, it likes to stall at traffic lights here and there. And she has no power going up hills. I checked the fuel placement sensor, the fuel pressure regulator, the O2 sensor, and the temp sending unit. They’re all OK.

so what could it be????

How could you check the tension without pulling the cover off?
Answer:You can't.

How long since it was changed? Being twenty years old it should have been changed a couple times already. Also by now the tensioner is probably shot.

Next you should check the Throttle position sensor.
Was this a crate engine or a rebuild ?

DOH ! I forgot the older systems had those #$%&@ things.
Usually when those went bad the engine wouldn't even start.

I'm still leaning toward a bad injector as you said you need to open the throttle when starting.

Could be something really simple like spark: fouled plugs, bad or slightly disconnected plug wires, bad cap/rotor... I'd start there. Make sure every cyl is getting a good spark and good clean plugs are attached.

Or air: make sure the air filter or air intake hose isn't clogged/blocked. Take the air filter out and then try to run it.

Other things: make sure a vacuum hose hasn't come off; check/reset your timing. Did they change/clean your injectors when they replaced the engine? Could try running some nasty injector cleaner through it. Theres some stuff called seafoam that people rave about, but I've never tried it.

My 94 2.3l acted like that and it was the coolant temperature sensor.

Get a Noid Light at the local auto parts store for a few bucks and check to see that each injector is firing repetitively. This is a device that plugs into the injector harness (in place of the injector) and has a simple test light on it.

Whaaaaaaat??? What could the coolant temperature sensor have to do with moderating fuel delivery?

you car need more fuel when its could. so if the coolant temperature sensor is not working right, say its reading that its could but its not it will run rich. but i replaced that, so i know thats not it.
