Lifter tick
Checked this out. It is not a lifter tick. I got a steth and the tapping sound is strongest around the water pump. No sound on the head or valve cover. No change without serpentine belt, so it is not the water pump itself. Sounds is not loud on exhaust or intake side of head.
It does not sound like a rock knocking. I would tend to discard rod/main bearings. Rings are also great - engine still has factory cross hatching with nothing else in the cylinder walls.
The tapping only starts when the truck gets quite warmed up. On morning startup, it will not tap at all. No sound with the steth at that point.
Yesterday I drove 20 minutes on the highway and no tap. 10 minutes later it started. It is also a strange rhythm. It is crankshaft speed. A regular tap would go "tap - tap - tap - tap" - but this one goes " tap - tap - tap - tap tap tap." Sometimes an old broken timing belt cover could make that type sound - but this cover is perfect.
Anyone have any thoughts? What taps (not knocks) when the engine warms up?
