Icon5 Looking to swap my 2.5L 4 cylinder for something a little bigger

Hello everyone, I am kind of new to this whole mechanics thing, and I am learning almost every time I open a thread here. So bare with me through this lol. I bought my truck from some pretty sh*tty guys who had destroyed the exhaust, and never replaced anything besides the clutch when it went out. I want to put a different engine in, and I was wondering if I can put a 4.0 in it and if so, where should I look and what will I need?

Welcome to the forum

Start with year of Ranger
I assume 1998 to 2001 since they had the 2.5l Lima engines

No, you would not want to swap in a 4.0l engine, or even a 3.0l engine to a 2.5l Ranger
You can go out and buy a 4.0l or 3.0l Ranger already done, a Factory Ford Ranger, and much cheaper than the cost of a swap.

To swap to a different size engine you need:
Engine
Transmission
Computer for that engine size, and transmission if automatic
Engine wiring harness
Exhaust
Radiator
drive shaft
Mounts for all the new parts

That's for any new engine size

So it doesn't make "cents" to make something you can just go out and buy already done, and done right.

A V8 swap can make "cents" because it is not something Ford put into Rangers.
V8 swap is EXACTLY the same amount of work, you need the same parts and labor to install.

Lots of info out there on Ranger V8 swaps, been done many times and on many different years of Rangers, so you won't be going in blind.

Other thing to look at when you have a 4cyl engine is turbo charging.
Turbo charging has the most power gain on smaller engines, plus you still get the better MPG when not using boost.
Cost for parts and tuning is not cheap, but if you want just a bit more power(5" boost) you don't need to change anything in the engine.
Look at turbo charging 2.3l lima engines, you have this engine, it is just a stroked version

You are right, its a 2.5L 4-cylinder in a Ranger 99. I made a similar post and you all seem to agree that its better to do a V8 swap, or just buy a truck with a bigger engine in it. Thank you for helping me learn and understand this better :)
