Hello, first time I have ever been on a forum so take it easy on me. 99 ranger single cab 2.5l SOHC 5 speed manual. My truck is my baby. I have had it for 20 years and put on 250k in wear and tear. I will Never sell or Trash this truck. It feels tired. I am looking for options. Doesnt have to be reasonable. One thing I have considered is a swap. I have looked into an old 2.5l contour 6cyl svt motor or a duratec 2.5 I4. How difficult would this be? Are there better or easier options. I am not opposed to diesel. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum
Ranger engine bay has limited width between steering shaft on drivers side and heater box on passenger side
The 302/5.0l OHV Ford V8 is 19" wide and barely fits, but does fit so was a popular swap into Rangers
Its also only 21" high so fits between frame rails and hood can close, lol
When you look at Over Head Cam engines they tend to get wider and taller, on V6s and V8s with 90deg cylinders OHC is too wide, 25+ inches, the 4.0l SOHC was 60deg so fit in Rangers

You will find SWAP options, even a 2.3l ecoboost swap
When you change engine size you will always have to swap transmissions to match new engine's bolt pattern, and, of course, swap engine computer and wiring harness
You CAN do any swap, but limiting factor is physical size of new engine, so check that first
Basically you have
20" width
23" high
28" long, assuming e-Fan
