Hi Everybody,

Just got an '83 ranger, I think it is the 2.3L, not really sure. There are many things that it will need but right now the most pressing is that it runs at a really high idle. I believe it was set this way to make it easier to start (and sell) It seems to be running really really rich, lots of knocking when I turn it off and I did an 80 mile round trip today and it took a half tank of gas!

I took a look at the carb and could see that the choke was disabled. I haven't worked on cars for sometime, I was a volkswagon guy when I was in my 20's. I'm actually looking forward to getting my hands dirty again - any advice for this current problem? good place to get carbs? or rebuilds? Is there ever a legitimate reason to disable the choke?

Help!

Thanks.

Ramon

yeah, if it's carbureted, that makes the problem easier to pinpoint. The idle speed is adjustable with a little screw. The choke can be reconnected with a cable kit. I have heard that these are very cheap. The choke may have been disabled because it was automatic and being annoying to the owner, but I don't know for sure.
