Randomly as I'm driving my Ranger will lose pickup. The RPM's will go up when I press the gas, but it does not go. When I slow down the engine will eventually die. This has happened twice now in the last six months. Then it will drive fine for a while. What could this be?

 

engine size, year, auto or manual trans, mileage, is check engine light on????

1998, 2.5L, manual trans.There is roughly 60,000 on engine, and 175,000 on tranny. The check engine light is not on.
