Ok I have almost all of the information to draw up the top coil-over spacers, just curious what the width of the coil-over's top mount is.. If anyone had one laying around it would be helpful. Seems all these parts are unavailable, or hard to get- having a detail print would be nice...

For that little amount of money, it wasn't worth me trying to make my own...time is money! I just got them about two weeks ago myself. Tonight I SHOULD be able to get everyone some pictures along with measurements for those aluminum spacers off the actual RCD ones. |

They didn't have the same part number and they were valved differently. Whoever posted a part number didn't post it for the custom Fox coil-over's ORW offered. EDIT: i decided to do a little searching after sending a pm and reading the "my coilover...." thread. i don't know if this would help anyone but it did help me eshocks.com: Bilstein Off-Road Shock Guide since it seems to get overlooked and forgotten, mudslanger's valving was 70/50 as posted in post 231 of his thread. according to the chart i posted, his valving is extremely soft and bilstein doesn't list them in the chart but they were custom for the ranger from fox (apples to oranges). would that make his ride stiff or soft? |
As long as the valving and total length was correct for the vehicle you planned on using it for, I can't see where having too much travel would be a bad thing. As long as you didn't have too little travel, bottoming out the coilover. Which might broaden the available choices in shocks for anyone looking to do a coilover conversion???

Valving numbers vary by brand. In general Bilstein uses xxx/xx. The xxx is the compression damping and xx is the rebound damping, both in Newton Meters per Second. King uses shim thicknesses. For example, the compression stack might be all .010” Shims and the rebound stack might be .012” shim thicknesses. Fox uses percentages. For example 50/70, where 50 means 50% of the available compression damping and 70 means 70% of the available rebound damping. If the place you’re buying your coil-overs from don’t ask you about your vehicle and it's usage, or they don’t offer free custom valving...don’t buy them from them! My guy asked about how my truck would be used (% on road versus off road, type of vehicle etc). Since I'm buying Fox brand coil-overs so I mentioned the 70/50 used in that other thread, but due to my truck being on road for 60% of the time, he recommended I modify it to a 70/65, thus raising the rebound damping to "slow it down a bit when it try's to unload from being compressed". |

I have not been able to find specific info that the standard 5" travel Fox coil-over (also with proper custom valving) will work on a stock height Ranger...but I plan on finding out! Hence my "gamble"! I’m betting that since the larger coil-over works without being custom beyond the valving (which any “real” dealer should be able to provide recommendations on), the slightly smaller version should work on a non-lifted truck! But I guess I will be finding out! |

Well for what it's worth...
On my end everything has been ordered for my “gamble”...I got the chrome upgrade on my Fox CO’s so it takes an additional 4-6 weeks to get them. I've been purchasing everything else, including a couple different length Eibach springs to play with, and once I get around to putting it all on my truck I plan on making a separate mini-build thread with all the part numbers and everything documenting what I did for my stock suspension setup. Once I know everything works, I will post all the details I have been collecting. I've been keeping a record of all the part numbers, places I bought from, who I got help from and the total costs. |
