Coil spring insulators and retainer bolt
Coil spring insulators and retainer bolt
I recently replaced my coil springs on my 98 Ranger 2wd 3.0 spring code C, and they make a very noticeable clunking noise when I go through dips, over speedbumps, pull in the driveway etc. When I removed the old ones, there were no spring insulators in the bottom control arms, as well as nothing holding the spring in its seat, as I have read there should have been. Am I correct in assuming these parts should be there? And that their absence is resulting in this noise?
I have a 2001 ranger but heard that it only uses top insulators? Is this true or can anyone confirm? When on rockauto they have both bottom and top insulators so wondering if I should get both when I do the swap of my coil springs to new?
Thanks,
-Nigel

Don't buy the bottom insulators that rock auto has listed for your year, it is the incorrect part which they have listed. You want 4x top insulators the coil spring is the same size on top as it is on the bottom and I used the same insulators on all four contact points and they work beautifully. My always noisy front end is now as quiet as a new truck.

I figured change out my springs because he was using those stupid spacer things, which the driver side only has one and the passenger side has two... so I figure the springs are sagging and should be replaced?
Would I notice a difference having the bottom ones on since there aren't any there now? I don't know if there are even top ones until I start taking things apart. My front end was squeaky but after I replaced the shocks that went away.
Thanks,
-Nigel
