Wrap a strip of paper or a piece of string around the bar and mark it for circumference. Then flatten it out, measure the circumference with a ruler and divide by 3.14 to get the diameter.

For many years, depending on options, the Ranger has had either 1.06" (1 1/16") or 1.14" (1 1/8") diameter sway bar. In metric, these correspond to roughly 27mm or 29mm. One of these will probably be very close to the diameter that you found by measuring.

it is the 1.14 which is 29mm but energy only makes a 28.5 and a 30mm which would be better to use

I'd get the 28.5mm.

I recently bought my 2008 Ranger XLT 4.0 liter 4x4. The sway bar bushings started squeaking and groaning last week, so I checked them out. They appear to have been greased with a petroleum based lube, which I imagine is further deteriorating them. I want to swap to poly, so I looked them up on Rock Auto. This was where I learned of the 2 sizes... so I broke out my caliper, and it measures 33 mm. Whats that about? Is this an optional sway bar?

Some Explorers had heavier front bars like that. I've never seen one on a Ranger though.

Sorry for posting on this old thread but I cant find anyone else that has had this problem. I got 33mm when i measured my sway bar on my 2008 FX4 and it seems like a very uncommon size. Am i measuring it wrong or did some rangers just randomly come with huge sway bars?

further adding to the zombie thread, but I just wanted to mention, that I did my sway bar links yesterday and wanted to do the bushings too so I got the biggest bushings partsource had (29mm) and they were waaaay too small. my 2008 sport 2wd also has a 33mm sway bar. is this one of those random new things that they just added to use up older stock?

FWIW, Hollander Exchange shows that the 98~01 Explorer/Mountaineer sway bars are interchangeable with 2008~2011 torsion bar Rangers. You could look into the possibility of using the bushings for those Ex/Mounty years assuming that the metal mounting brackets are the same for both.

My mazda b4000 08 had also a 33mm sway bar (33.15mm exactly). I bought bushing for explorer 2000 and it fit perfectly.

I discovered that my sway-bar links had no bushings at all, so I figured while I was replacing those I should do the big bushings on the sway bar itself. But the ones I ordered from PartsGeek
https://www.partsgeek.com/ss/?i=1&ss...nd+Bushing+Kit
which were supposed to be correct for the 2009 FX4, were way too small. Like a couple of other people here, my stock ones had a bore of about 33mm. Anybody know what the deal is here?
