leaf springs snaped (PICS) :(
today driving down a main road i heard a big snap and my rear end diped down. my drivers side leaf sping snaped, only the middle bar snaped and i noticed the other day it looked a little low in the back.
the one on my pasanger side i took a look at it and it is compleatly straight accross and i thougt it was convex shape towards the ground and there isnt anything in the bed to weigh it down. does that mean that the passanger side is starting to get weak also??
how much does a new leaf spring cost and i bringing it to minekee in the morning to get fixed and if the pasanger side is ok i dont waqnt them to suck me into another one.
thanx
Nick
add ons these are the drivers side (snaped one)
middle leaf
passangers side i dont know if they also need replacing??

I snapped the bottom leaf on my drivers side......just noticed a clunking noice every now and then. Only checked it out after the noise got worse.
I brought it to a local shop that only does truck suspension and drivetrains. TDL truck & trailer supplies. It cost me $100 to replace the broken leaf. Leafs shouldn't break, but anything is possible. All I'll say is, go to Ford and prepair to get, well...you know. $700 for a new leaf pack, because like everything else, it only comes as a set....oh Ford. Check around for shop prices and you'll be o.k.

I guess it's just "one of those things"....LOL
The guy at the shop said that most time it's from overloaded leafs or from people using the wrong type of lift blocks.....but for mine, he said it's just one of those things...LOL
Not too hard to swap out the broken leaf for a new one, but I let the shop do it. I got a new leaf, clamps, and new U-bolts on that side.
Good luck!!!

thanx everyone but it all fixed now. i found aguy at a welding shop he does the big tractor trailors and specialises with leaf springs, he ended up making a new one from a pieace of stock steal thats stronger then the factory ford meatlas. he bent it and replaced it for only 150$ pritty good and he explaned how it happened and ill tell.
in the seccond shot of my springs in the pics u can see the middle leaf was the one that broke and theres a plate in there that if u look closely u can see it wraps arounf the middle and top leaf and ford puts it in there for quick adjustments so they dont have to align the springs it automaticaly makes them fit togeather. he said after the years of it and the cold to warm temps we been having hear it makes the metal shrink and expand and it helped wear out that part of the leaf, and thats why it snaped in suck a nice clean line.
i know a lot to read but i long winded :)
and than to everyone what helped and was willing to help me out first time on today so i never saw any responces.

this happened to my dads 95 F150. he had one side break toward the front and the other side break toward the rear...so he had two broken leafs on the truck. handles like **** and rode terrible.
anyway, its a pretty commen problem. he hardly uses his for actual work, just a daily driver. u did the right thing though, we had a set of 5 leaf spring packs made for each side at a local big rig shop and they worked out great. that is the best way to go IMO...cuz they repair this **** all the time. cost $100 for the leaf packs and hardware.
funny how his broke two leafs and i havent broke one yet and im 5x harder on mine then he is...i think i just jinxed myself.

heres what happens...
when metal rubs against metal like in a leaf spring pack, the two pieces scuff the surfaces. over time this raises the temper of the metal in the immediate area and when the temper is raised, it becomes brittle.
so say it was rubbing and got tempered a little...then the area had a hairline fracture because of the brittle metal. over time the fracture shrink and expands, allowing contaminates in. this will slowly spread through out the fracture and make it spread along with making it larger. and then one day it breaks because its a small fracture zone and a fast break...hence the 90 degree angle of the break.
the same also holds true with the center pin in the leaf pack that holds them together. over time the constant vibrating around the pin will temper the metal making it brittle.
so yes, powder coating will help, also placing the liners inside help a lot. also an unloaded truck driving over bad roads is the worst thing for a leaf pack, and is probaly why my dads broke. its a little odd seeing a newer truck like this break a spring but its not uncommen for it to happen...i seen it mostly on F250 and 350s because unloaded driving is the hardest on them.
