Pre-key Mod, 99 Explorer Keys?
Pre-key Mod, 99 Explorer Keys?
Hey Guys, I want to do the prekey mod to my truck and I have access to some keys from a 99 Explorer. Does anyone know if these are the same as the Ranger keys? I was looking at the aftermarket leveling keys and they all say they are good for 98 - 08 Explorers and Rangers so im thinking they are the same. I would like to find out for sure though before I go ripping them off lol.
No one has yet to pull Explorer keys to compare if they're the same or different than 98-07 Ranger keys. I've been meaning to do it, but having yet.
Take one for the team and pull 'em! It'll confirm or deny that they are the same...it'll benefit those in the future looking to PreKey. In the prekey sticky at the top of the suspension section, there's comparison pics between PreKey and PostKey(08+).

they're the same... I've pulled some myself after I took out the AFTERMARKET ones... haven't checked that stickie but does it say something like it's a waste of $150? lol... crank your torsion bars with the stock keys for an inch of height adjustment (note how I didn't say lift? lol) and save the money for a more useful mod... you're balljoints, tie rod ends, cv's, and your back will thank me later...

The sticky does "down" on those "leveling kit" keys. BUT...if you actually go to that sticky, you'll learn about the PreKey mod and how Ford lowered the trucks and clocked the keys in '08. PreKey mod puts in a stock 98-07 Ranger key and you gain about 1.5" with the same adjustment bolt preload....aka makes the truck an 07 and prior truck with the same wear and other things as a 98-07 truck. PreKey can be related to those troublesom "leveling" keys, but they are worlds apart. Swapping stock for stock. It's perfectly safe. Plus, doing this, allows for longer lives of the bars because you have that extra few degrees in the key to crank.
The keys and rear blocks were the only items changed in 08+ trucks.

I see... yeah, I agree with you 100% it wouldn't cause any issues to do that... wasn't aware ford changed the keys out... for the record, I'm not sure what year truck the OP has to begin with, so it could be a moot point... judging by the post, I guess he could very well have an '08...
so to answer the question once again: explorer keys are the same as the rangers (from '98-'07 :))

Yeah Joey, no probs man. I just didn't wanna turn this into a torsion key war like on other sites. haha.
I suppose if I feel like freezing my nads inside of me, I could go pull a couple sets at the yard. Maybe. lol.

FWIW (no pic though) I've set the explorer keys on top of the ranger keys and they're "clocked" the same... well, I guess the '08+ are different, haha... I tried pulling part numbers off Rockauto with no success...

^^Sounds good. I have always had a feeling they're the same. Time for me to confirm myself.
When and if I feel like it this week, I'll go pull a few sets of 95-01 explorer keys. Compare 'em to the pics I've got of stock 98-07 Ranger keys....then I'll post in the PreKey sticky.

haha, I had like 10k+ posts over there before it was left for dead, lol... glad to be on RF, now... not nearly as bad as I originally thought... lol, more of a desert kind of guy... but I guess if I can share the little bit of knowledge I have of these trucks, why not, right? haha...
