Rear leaf spring upgrade
Rear leaf spring upgrade
Looking to beef up my rear suspension, pull a fairly heavy mowing trailer and the rear end sags. What would be my best option, looking into the 4/1 leaf pack from SD truck springs. Also saw some bolt on helper springs. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks
IMO overloads are the best option
Springs are rated for the weight they are expected to carry, pickup trucks are a pain because the weight can vary so much.
A 1/2 ton rating means springs have to be rated for empty bed weight PLUS 1,000lbs
This can make for a stiff and bouncy ride with empty bed, also loss of traction if rear tires are not staying on the ground on wash board roads
It reads like you have good springs for empty bed ride, lol, sag with extra weight added so soft enough when bed is empty
Over load leafs only come into contact with the frame when weight gets above a certain point, so stops the sagging with a load, but when weight is removed you don't get the harsh ride you will get with higher weight rated full leaf springs.

If they're anything like mine, they are, especially if you've been overloading them for some time. Just pop the wheels off and visually check the arch. If they're in the shape of a "W", they're worn out.
