thats great and all but his truck doesnt have a 31 spline 8.8 so your not even comparing the right axles. a 31 spline 9" is much stronger then a 28 spline 8.8. not to mention the 9" doenst have the carrier problems like an 8.8 and the gear design is superior to the 8.8.

he could upgrade to the 31 spline 8.8 easier than he could swap in a 9".......not to mention to go to a larger than 3.73 gear in a 9" you have to replace the carrier.......

i feel that the need to change the carrier is not a desiding point if your gonna run a detroit or an ected which is a whole new carrier piece anyway

this is true, but in his situation, he isn't off roading at all, so if he has the 8.8 axles redrilled to a 5x5.5 bolt pattern will be plenty enough.........

BTW.....are we still on for the 21st Scott?

9" doesnt have a carrier break, you can use any carrier with any gear set

Ditto what andrew said. Stock 8.8 carriers will break, and they will spin the tubes if you do not weld them. 9" don't have that problem since the housing is one peice, and they have a beefier carrier.

BUT, I will argue that my 31 spline 8.8 with welded tubes, detroit and superior shafts is just as strong as a 9" in similar form. Besides the c-clip argument, if you break a c-clip, it has discs so the axle won't fly out.
