Use a jack to lift the arm. Is the spindle disconnected from the control arm?

No I'm just trying to figure out your problem. You have the tire on and everything connected I don't know what your problem is. Take a picture or something. Or a little better explanation.

Your shock shouldn't be holding your front suspension together.

If the truck is on all fours what do you need to jack it up for? What are you trying to connect?

If using a floor jack put the jack in the center of the A frame, jack up so tire is off ground, put jack stands in, put floor jack under A arm, jack up,

I've changed shocks on my old 94 Ranger twice and once on my 2008 FX4 and there's no need to compress the a-arms or do anything like that. If you had to do that, you either have the wrong shocks or there is something not standard on your Ranger front suspension.
