Top/bottom wheel play with suspension components
Top/bottom wheel play with suspension components
Hi,
I have a 1997 Super Cab, 2wd, 2.3L, manual.
Last year I replaced the ball joints, tie rods, and wheel bearings. I then ran the truck for a year (~4000 miles) with really crappy mismatched tires; the truck shook a lot when driving at higher speeds. I'm not proud of it but its been done. I just put new tires on which eliminated the shaking. I noticed play in the wheels when jacked up in all directions. I replaced the wheel bearings and everything seemed tightened up. I've driven a couple hundred miles since replacing the wheel bearings and I notice that the passenger side wheel has some play at 6 and 12 o'clock... about 1 mm of movement on the outer edge of the tire.
Given that all suspension components are relatively new any ideas of what to check to eliminate this play. Or is this amount of movement normal/expected.
Thanks!

If the 12 to 6 o'clock play seems the same as the 3 to 9 o'clock, it might be a loose bearing. Adjust the bearing and try again. 3 to 9 o'clock play is the tie rod play and the 12 to 6 o'clock play is ball joints, but you need to have jacked under the lower control arm as close to the ball joint as possible so the spring is not tightening the ball joint. The ball joints need to be free to move before you can feel any slop in them.
