Torsion Bar Cranking
#53
So 2004 ranger 90K miles with a lot of off roading. Time for a change and some work to it. Replaced all shocks, cranked the bars tonight and got 265/75 16's going on tomorrow with allignment. On the driver bolt i had 8 threads left on it and the pass. had 14threads( before any cranking). Just thought i'd share. I turned them about 3.5 full turns. Just wanted to get some extra for the tires and get it up to a place where i felt it rode good still and looked better.

I feel like I'm lighting a powder keg here, but I am just trying to understand all of this, so please don't yell at me.
From what I have read, by cranking the torsion bar, ultimately the body of the truck receives a lift at the cost of the top of the front tires bowing in towards each other. Am I correct in this thinking?
My ranger currently appears to have incorrect camber. The tops of the tires bow in towards each other, in my eyes, too much. I feel that this is wearing my tires incorrectly.
Essentially, can I adjust the t-bar to widen the gap between the tops of the tires. In doing so will that change the elevation of the body? What else would that change in regard to the rest of the suspension? Can I undo any changes that might prove to be worse than before?

Cranking the torsion bar doesnt move the body of the truck at all, it raises the suspension. the more you crank them the more tension there is on your bars as well as added stress to front end parts. I highly doubt that uncranking them will fix your problem. If i were you, I'd invest in a camber kit next time you go for an alignment one of the best investments i've made.

i seam to be having a lot of problems with my front end. i thought the tires were bad because i was getting that wamp wamp sound going down the road had them replaced; no help.also everytime i go over a bump it feels like i have no shocks so i replaced them. that did not affect it at all.there is a shacking in the truck when you get up to speed too. i have had it to several garages and they can not find anything wrong. it has not drove like this in the past. do yoes anybody have a glue whats going on?

Hi, I'm mike, new here and to torsion bars. Got an 02 Edge ext. cab, and I believe the po cranked the torsion bars, and it did make the truck look nice. The only problem it had when I bought it was 4 very bad tires. When I had these replaced, I checked everything under the front end and all boots, bushings, brake pads, all looked A=1...that was only 7000 miles ago. Recently the ABS warning thing came on and when I crawled under, all 4 ball joints are gone, all the bushings with the stabilizer bar are gone, the brake pads are shot, and I don't know what else has been killed yet...I've been all over the internet trying to find out how to return the torsion bar back to factory, but absolutely no one has any info on anything except raising. I know, if you do the raising, record where everything was before you do it to return it if there are problems, but the po did not have the good graces to pass this info along with the truck and I'm stuck. I'm a victim of the VA with a little one with seizures, and this is our only ride so I'm going to keep digging. Personally, I feell tweaking these tbars was a horrible thing to do. Anyway, good luck and keep on truckin (I know, but I went out with the 60s too!)

Old Thread wow
The only way to actually find out if they are cranked is measure. look and see if the adjuster bolt is all the way cranked. look for any marks on the bolt from a socket being on there. Cranking your bars will kill ball joints, and wear the front tires if it is not aligned afterward. check these simple things and check back in. Also just de crank them to you desired height then go for an alignment, Replace with MOOG Joints

No ****. I barely knew D and didn't see eye to eye on his views about politics but they guy was smart and had a ton of good info to share.
If all Your gonna do is bump a zombie of a thread w/ BS, GTFO. It's not welcome here and neither are you. This site has alot of good info and a ton of people who have a wide variety of mad skills. Everything from engines to custom fab to wiring knowledge and what is interchangeable with other things.
You obviously bring nothing to the table.

Woo sorry didn't mean to offend anyone, I was just lurking trying to learn more and got aggravated at how to me it appeared he was simply trying to sound intelligent, again I said "appeared to me" and he's probably a good guy so I didn't mean to insult, and you are right if I think this post is bad enough that I need to talk poorly of it then I should have added to it to make it better. Anyway yea i just signed up I don't know what graveyard means. I am sure the guy is smart but this post didn't seem to clearly show any useful information to me, but whatever I don't need to go around insulting other peoples posts, if I don't find it useful I just shouldn't continue reading, I know I know sorry.

If you were here when he was around, you'd understand lol. I don't know what it is a sticky either, he has information that is incorrect in his first post too. It's all overworded to try and make himself appear more knowledgeable than he really is. All it is really saying is to get an alignment after if you adjust your torsion bars. Which is common sense as the suspension geometry changes as the suspension moves.
