Upper control arm replacement question

Hello all,

I've been doing suspension work recently before i go to college and so far i've replaced all four shocks and outer tie rods. Up next are the upper control arms since the passenger boot is torn and i have a passenger side squeak and i think its the culprit. My two questions are do you really have to jack up the car to replace just the uppers? ive seen a lot of people struggle putting the ball joint in the spindle during reinstallment. I was just wondering if i could just leave it on the ground instead of jacking up the lower control arm to artificially put weight on the suspension. This would also save me from having to buy jack and jack stands. I know ill need them eventually bc i think ill be doing the lowers as well eventually but not yet.

What do you guys think of the mevotech greasable entire control arm unit. rock autos got them for a little under $60 for left and right side. Im doing this on my 2005 edge with torsion bars.

Thanks in advance for any help

Well, you have to jack it up to get the tire off, otherwise you cant get the UCA off. And you should never work on a vehicle while its on
a jack, so for safety use a jack stand.

About a year ago I rebuilt my front end, but I did upper and lower, so I had to jack it up and support it under the frame to get the lowers off.
I bought my kit from 1A Auto, but not sure of their brand. I don't plan on keeping the truck for much longer. And you have to replace the
whole control arm as the ball joints aren't replaceable. Doesn't matter if you had the 2 part UCA on the passenger side, you can use the single unit.
I have used Mevo Tech on a F150 I had, but sold that about a year later, so can't attest to the longevity of the parts.

yeah, I didn't understand how you could replace something that is attached to the wheel and not remove the wheel. I know when I did my uppers, I certainly had to remove the wheel.
