Would 2002 F150 SuperCrew Leafs fit our Trucks???

As the title says...

Would 2002 F150 SuperCrew leafs fit a Ranger? I know Explorers fit our trucks, an the SuperCrew leafs eye to eye measurement is within 1/2" of the Expos. so it might fit. idk.

Thanks!

Shane

i imagine the ride would be a bit rough .... and based on your informations maybe some shims if the f150 is narrower?

TrePaul86 04-13-2009 06:39 PM

Ok so here's the deal.

Since my leafs are all f'ed up... I went to the JY today to find new leafs. Explorers I know give some lift and fit our trucks just fine. So I stumbled across a 2003 F-150 Crew cab 4x4 short bed and the leafs looked about the right size.

Measurements:

Explorer sport 2dr (4 leaf pack) - 54in
F-150 Crew cab 4wd Short Bed - 55in

Both have a width of 2.5in (roughly)

I have a shackles that can make up for that difference of 1in but I need to know if they will work under the truck. If this will work I'll eliminate the AAL and rear block and just run the 150 leafs and shackles.

They want around $75 for the pair... Originally tried selling me them for $65 a side so $130 total. I'm going to talk them down to $50 for the set tomorrow. I couldn't finish pulling them today because I needed 23mm socket. Don't have one yet, so I'll go get one for tomorrow and go get em.

I'm assuming with the rating of the leafs for the size truck they're on vs. what they're going to go on, it should give me a good 3-4in of lift in the rear. Hopefully.

Woods-Rider 04-13-2009 06:48 PM

and be pretty stiff if you keep all the leafs in the pack.

TrePaul86 04-13-2009 06:50 PM

Wouldn't be too bad I imagine. I could always remove a leaf too. First one after the overload. Still... I'm looking to eliminate the block and AAL and these leafs seem to be the ones to do it for under $300 (for the deavers)

ranger 04-13-2009 06:54 PM

I would just be worried about where the axle will end up at. will it move forward/ rearward an inch? stay the same? will the driveshaft be too long? to short? especially if you flex it out?

TrePaul86 04-13-2009 06:58 PM

Well if I remember what shane was saying the explorer leafs fit our trucks. Bolt in. And they provide roughly 2-3in of lift (depending on how used the springs are).

The 150's springs are only 1in longer in over all length, and I have a shackle which will make up the difference. I'm actually hoping to not only lose the block and AAL, but to lose about .5-1" of lift in the rear to level it out, or bull dog stance it.

I still have new shocks to put under the truck too sitting in my garage, which will help with the ride issue. So with the AAL and block gone, hoping to lose some lift with these leafs, is there still driveline issues to worry about? I don't think the axle sits any more off center from where it is already. How can I tell? Measure where the center pin is from the front eye?

RazorsEDGE 04-13-2009 06:59 PM

I'm pretty sure the f150s leafs are 3" wide....

TrePaul86 04-13-2009 07:00 PM

Maybe on standard cab's with long boxes. I'm almost positive these were the same width as the explorer sport's I measured that were right behind it.

RazorsEDGE 04-13-2009 07:05 PM

I know 04+ is 3" wide. The older trucks I don't know, they could be 2.5" wide. :dunno:

TrePaul86 04-13-2009 07:06 PM

Yeah this was a 2003. So maybe it hit the cut off! I'm almost 100% positive I read the tape at 2.5in

You think they'll work ryan? And not cause any issues?

big-blue-oval 04-13-2009 07:07 PM

yeah, just measure out where the center pin is on the leaves. probably best to measure from the front (static hanger), as that is more crutial.

TrePaul86 04-13-2009 07:08 PM

Yeah I'll measure mine right now and measure the 150's tomorrow. Hang on.

TrePaul86 04-13-2009 07:29 PM

Ok so I went out and measure my leafs... With my truck on the ground I'm sittin at 56.5in eye to eye with my RCD AAL in (don't know if that matters or not).

Front eye of the leafs to the center pin is 25.5in and rear eye to center pin is approx 30.5in.

I'm going to measure the 150 tomorrow...

PUNKROCKPILOT 04-13-2009 08:41 PM

hmmmm..... you got me interested. I always thought the 150 leafs were wider too. But i have never measured. Im with 'D', i want to know if the center hole will line up the axle in the same place, or will it push if forward or backward?

TrePaul86 04-13-2009 09:51 PM

So I talked to a buddy of mine. He said that even though the leafs are only 1" longer that I need to move my rear spring hanger back an inch to compensate for the longer length... Said it's not hard, people do it all the time, you just torch out the rivets and put in some grade 8 bolts and nuts when you move it back. But told me it will only work to use those leafs is the center pin is the same distance from the front eye as the springs I have on it now and facing the same direction (point forward or backward) as the springs I have now.

Now with the spring hangar moved 1in back on the frame that opens up the ride quality dept. and being a lot better. Not only that but I won't lose any flex or articulation if I do go wheelin. With the longer leafs, may also increase the wheel travel.

Cam, from what Ryan said it looks like the 150's started using 3in wide leafs in 2004. So through 2003 they all used 2.5in width leafs. If this is the case, if you really gain that much lift from these springs by moving them 1in further back on the frame (rear hanger) as well as travel, this may be a new alternative to people running the RCD and superlift... As well as those with LT kits wanting lift and travel.

Tomorrow I'll be measuring the leafs.

Dang $75 for junkyard leaves. $30 a pair here. But no never f150s.

Lets see them work!! Make sure to do a how-to!

TrePaul86 04-13-2009 10:12 PM

I know it's stupid because it's not a LKQ yard... They charged me I think $25 for my FX4 C-leafs... And now this yard wants $75 for USED F150 leafs? I'm going to talk him down to at least $50 tomorrow. No way in hell I'm going to pay $130 for USED springs. lol

I'm willing to do a how to on the leafs though. We'll see how much lift they give and stuff. Should be interesting.

FRXLT 04-13-2009 10:40 PM

Now you have me interested. I need new leaf springs and to get rid of my stupid aal and raise the rear end to make it level.

08XLT4x4 04-13-2009 10:48 PM

I like Skyjacker's leaf springs. totally different budget wise, but I say worth it when factoring in the hassle making something like 150 springs fit properly.

ETA: Shane, youre a moderator now? Awesome!

TrePaul86 04-13-2009 11:17 PM

Skyjacker wants more than the JY. So far this only seems to be $75 at most for the leafs, and maybe $15 in hardware for re locating the hangers.. Which will probably give more lift than the skyjackers for the price and increase travel with the longer length, even though it's not much.

I'm hoping to find out how much lift it actually does make by going off what I have now for numbers and what it make after the springs are on.

True... skyjackers are by no means a "good deal"

Why not just run expo leafs? They are proven to work properly and are easy to find...at least in my local junkyards (which suck compared to what you guys have up there!)

Dangerranger01 04-13-2009 11:21 PM

if only we knew actually numbers (the spring constant, weight on each corner of truck, etc) we could calculate expected height

TrePaul86 04-13-2009 11:30 PM

I found one at the JY... It was a expo leaf pack but the u-bolts are hard to get to being the truck is not on rear tires and the axle is almost laying on the ground... I could do it yeah, but I would need a way to lift the back end up and you can't take jacks back there.

I might try and snag the leafs off of that expo tomorrow though. They only had 63k on them and that would eliminate the 2.5in block and AAL and only having me run my factory chevy 1in blocks.

FRXLT 04-13-2009 11:39 PM

JW what model explorer leaf springs would you get? 2dr sport? or 4dr? Or does it not matter.
