Thanks for posting the video.
What were your symptoms?
Assume automatic trans since you mentioned transmission fix in the title.
1998-2000 Rangers did use the ABS rear axle sensor to send speed pulses to the speedometer, cruise control and computer.
ABS module connects to speed sensor, it then calculates speed based on tire size(ABS module can be reprogrammed for different sized tires).
After calculation it then sends out "actual speed" to speedometer, cruise control and computer.
Since computer controls shift points in automatic trans based on engine load and speed, incorrect speed would cause shift issues.
And of course no speedometer or erratic speedometer signals.
Yes, high end of repair could be $1,000, I would say over $1,000 if it was a Valve Body issue, causing erratic shifting.
But if mechanic knew speedo was also a symptom then he would have headed straight for the rear axle speed sensor and tested it.
Still it would be a $100-$200 bill for parts and labor.
If it was ABS module at fault then it would be more.

Well it all started when I was given the truck, due to my sister taking it to a mechanic and quoting her close to $1,000 dollars to fix. So when I took over I was preparing myself for a possible major fix. It had a lot of issues abs light, shifting issues, check engine light, speedometer not working and really a rough ride. Also didn't accelerate past about 80mph. I figured since it all boiled down to a $12.00 speed sensor. It could help others out from being ripped off by some cheap shot mechanic. Not saying they all are, just might be able to help others who might have the same symptoms. I was really relieved after because I still had quite a few other things I had to tackle on the truck due to the fact it was pretty much never maintenanced it was in some pretty bad shape. Tranny flush, coolantflush, oil flush, spark plugs and wires, etc. And $1000.00 would have really set me back. Oh and yes it is a automatic. :) v6 1999 Xlt. 151,000 miles and runs great.

Definately agree with you. He was supposedly a good friend to my sister and her main mechanic from what I hear. He was taking advantage for sure. Sometimes I just don't understand people. I know make money is the name of the game but that's doing the most probably because he knew she had no idea what to look for.
