Airing down and driving on the road
I am going to the beach soon and would like to air down. I have about a 30 mile drive to the beach, and I will be driving around 70 mph for 15 or more miles. I dont have a way to air back up so I would have to drive back home with the lower pressure. What is the lowest you guys think I can go wile still keeping it safe?
Would I even be able to air down enough to make much of a difference? I dont normally air down because my truck does great on sand but im going with a friend that has a 2wd and wants to try out new tires,and with the way he drives he will end up getting stuck. I would like to stay on top of the sand the best I can since I may have trouble getting him out because his truck is bigger then mine.

I know you can get a portable air compressor(not that quick but it works)for around $70, it would be worth it seeing your tires are how much more money. I really don't recommend airing down and then driving home on half flat tires. even at a low speed they would get soft and hot.
I didnt think of that. There are only 2 gas stations I pass that are close on the way home. I think one of them should have a place to air up the tires, I will check on my way there and if they do then ill air down and if not then I wont. Thanks for the idea, its so simple I wouldnt have thought of it. lol
you are near houston... are you going to galveston? crystal beach or which beach are you going too?
if you go to either one of those places theres no need to air down... i was out there saturday and we were dragging my friends bagged dodge ram down the beach on 22" low profile tires...

I live in bay city, and im going to matagorda beach. I dont need to air down if I drive on the packed down "road" (I guess you would call it that) that everyone drives on, but there is another "road" where it is soft deep sand where mainly 4wds go when they dont want to drive slow, or for fun, and if he gets stuck their I man need the extra traction. We are also going back in the dunes where its soft and mud in some spots and I have never pulled someone out at the beach, so I wanted to air down just to help me out in pulling the bigger truck if I had to. I wont air down unless I have to.
The other truck is a chevy silverado single cab short bed if anybody was wondering. I dont think I will even need to air down but I just wanted to ask, and I may air down just to like 30 or 25 psi just to see if I notice an improvement.

I jus got back from the dunes and my truck went more places in 2wd than most the other trucks in 4wd. I was aired down to bout 7psi in the rear and was bout 30-35 in the front. I drove bout 5 miles on pavement and it was cushy but never came off the bead or anything. The difference was HUGE when I aired down.
I've driven on my 33's with 15psi with no swaybars for 30 miles on the highway, but it was cold out. Kept it under 65 most of the time. It's doable, but it sucks.
Airing down (more than 15psi), makes a huge difference in the sand. Down to 10 or less works great.
