It will be a wile before I need tires but I have been looking anyway. My question is what do you guys suggest for use on mud and sand? I drive in both often and right now I seem to get stuck easy in the mud but unstoppable in the sand. I dont want to loose much ability to drive in the sand because im the truck to ride with when in the sand, but I get stuck way to easy in the mud.

I know this is alot to ask for from a tire but thats what i need. I would also like to keep the price down.

Hmm.. thats the problem there...

Its hard to find a tire thats both good in sand, AND good in mud.. because those are 2 completely different tread patterns your looking for.. As you linked, an All-Terrain is your best bet, but dont expect it to perform as good as just getting 2 different sets of tires Airing down is key for the sand though for sure.

 

I know this is like a standard answer for me but an MT/R should be the best of both worlds IMO.

 

yes, you are asking alot. all terrain tires are better in sand, and mud tires (duh) are better in mud. mud tires will tend to dig in the sand, and all terrains tend to get stuck in mud.

your best bet is probably a good all terrain and live with the lousy performance in mud, or get a mud terrain and be careful not to dig down to china!

 

Or just get the tire that you go in the most.

to tell you the truth i've only seen like 1 set of MT/Rs on the rocks and i dont think he really aired down.. i'm used to seeing Toyos, Iroks and TSLs

I think that your best bet is going to be Toyo Open Country M/T's. I think its a nice flat tread pattern that will give you enough flotation on sand but with the right set of tread to do great in mud. Now if the mud isn't that bad I'd defiantly go with BFG A/T's. I've got them, and in the mud they do fine as long as its not super deep. But they clean fair enough to keep you going.

Ive never seen a worse MT in the mud then the MTR

 

impossible! MT/Rs are not an MT. Ive done fine with them and have even seen tests that they have done very well in.

What do you guys think of these? This site gives them a good review but I would like to know how they are on a ranger. They are still kinda higher then I would like, but we will see once it comes down to getting new tires.

EDIT: The tire you picked out looks like a good mud tire. I have my doubts of how well it will do in the sand. If it will see street time, I suggest the procomp MT as its siped and helps out a lot on wet roads.

my MTZs have impressed the hell out of me with their performance in dirt and mud.. i'll probably go to the dunes here in a few weeks once i lock the rear.

I dont want boggers because this truck is a daily driver and it one got a slight t-bar crank to level it out so I would be afraid of just digging down to the frame in the mud with a tire like that. Plus it cost way to much for that tire....

I would rather the tire be better in the mud, the more I think about it I realize that I seem to get in some type of mud at least once a week and sand once every other week.

I was also thinking the firestone may not do good in the sand. I know that the tire I have now is on that site and I think its under rated when it comes to sand performance, it only got 3 stars It seemed about right for mud though which they also gave 3 stars for.

99ranger, I couldnt get 2 feet in that wile in 2wd. Did you try that in 4wd yet, or is your 4wd broke? I would never take my truck in water that deep though, I stay out of water deeper then my hubs unless I have no choice but to drive through it. I do really like the mtzs but not the price tag, I am very hard on my tires so they dont last that long.

I may just suck it up and go with the firestone and be careful in the sand. I still have a wile to choose because im about to replace the balljoints on my truck and then the trans is going to die any minute so I have a feeling ill be on these tire until they are slicks....

 

that was all 2wd, towards the end in the second video i threw it in low and 2nd because my truck didn't have the ***** to spin the tires in 2wd.. my 4wd is still gone, i'm going to lock the rear and call it good unless it looks like the SAS is a long ways away, after seeing what the truck can do with "1wd" the past few days im sure i can run a number of trails in colorado locked in the rear


my friends can get me to do some stupid stuff.. atleast when the guy with the winch is there. i was NOT looking forward to wading through waist deep water at probably just abover freezing to hook up though.

the MTZs at that size may be more expensive, at the 35" level they were the same price as BFGs and damn near the MT/Rs.. the toyos were $50 more a piece

Firestone MTs seem to work pretty good on the 2 trucks i've seen running them, they seem like a softer compound though

oh and you said your not easy on your tires.. i'm right there with you, im missing a few chunks of the tires that spent most of the winter on the back.
