You CAN'T buy domestic on some items -- we don't make them anymore. Buy foreign and you are helping to make that a reality in other goods.

It's NOT government, or tariffs, or whatever, that drives jobs offshore: it's people in this country CLAMORING for anything imported, at low prices. "Oh, but it's better quality!" -- just justifying your own desires, not a serious argument for destroying American jobs.

And that's my last post on this in this topic. Either you get or you don't.

Like I said: good tires, bad choice to my mind.

One funny thing though: Yokohama had Cooper making some of their tires because they couldn't or didn't want to supply them at one point. Don't know whether it's still true or not.

Welcome to George W. Bush's america.

Speaking of Cooper and Italian tires:

Cooper, Pirelli Say To Restructure U.S. Alliance

FINDLAY, Oh., April 4 (Reuters) - Tire manufacturers Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. (nyse: CTB - news - people ) and Pirelli Tire Worldwide on Thursday said they will restructure their three-year-old partnership agreement, with Pirelli resuming its own sales and customer service duties in the U.S. Findlay, Ohio-based Cooper said it will continue to manufacture certain U.S. product lines for Pirelli and will also manage Pirelli's logistics support. Cooper said the new set-up will take effect from July 1

SEE! I knew I wasn't un-American....

esp. working for Nissan...HORRORS!

FoMoCoFiddy 02-15-2005 12:43 PM

Im sorry, but im tired of **** like this..

You want me to buy american, fork out the extra money for me to pay for them, you arent buying my tires, and you arent paying for them...

Not all of us are as fortunate to have high paying jobs, and get everything we want..

I dont have alot of money, im getting these through a friend, for 110 a tire... He works at a shop, so mounting and balancing will be done for free..

You want me to pay more, you give me the money i dont have.. Sorry..

Dont try and make me look like im a bad person for buying something... Screw that..

Again, im angry right now, for other things, and yea, it came out in this comment, but i dont really care, cause somethings just need to be said, or not be said all..

FoMoCoFiddy 02-15-2005 12:45 PM

John, your tail lights were made in Japan...Hate yourself now? :tired:

No they're not american tires...

Thats why they last so long....

Wowak 02-15-2005 03:52 PM

John, the only reason I'm running imported tires is because the Firestones I wanted were on nation-wide backorder at the time, and I *really* needed tires.

Although I have been very pleased with the performance of these tires, I think I'll try the Firehawk Indy 500s if they're still in production when I next need tires.

Swoop1156 02-15-2005 05:00 PM

I don't know who makes what tire where, but I do like to research and buy American.

I live in Japan, should I hate myself because I am buying stuff in Japan when I have no choice? No, we all make decisions and you made the choice to get a hookup on Yoko-tires. They are cheap [for you] and a pretty decent tire. Myself, I would be willing to pay MORE for something made in the USA just to make me sleep better tonight.

That's me, I will go that extra mile to buy American, but we have to do what we have to do.

na, no burning up...

TippnOver 02-15-2005 08:45 PM

as far as the import/domestic thing goes, this will be my last american made automobile i ever have....i will ensure that...all 3 of my cars have been american made and i have had friends with imports cars/trucks and i just like those better...u can dog the hell outta an import and it'll be fine, where my american cars, i feel like i have to baby them to get them running ok....this doesnt mean i'm movin to china or japan, i will support them thru their autos well....frankly because they're kickin our ass in that department....

and i agree with leo on the "pay me" part...people tell me so so so many times that i should "jack it up with some 35" swampers" or "slam it on some 24" spinners and trick out the interior"...pay me for that ****...i think i'm doing damn good to keep my truck up and running and on top of things...gas alone eats up my paychecks, then theres the expense of oil and other necessary things to at least keep it looking in good condition should i decide to sell/trade....after all of these deductions, i'm left with very little to spend on things that i deem unnecessary...like over priced rims and dual exhaust chromed out and TV's and etc...i'd much rather donate that money to my "engagement fund"

Brent, I didn't even read your whole post. I must say that that is the first time I read something from you that I really didn't agree with, and you couldn't be more wrong, my friend.

You can't tell me that an American car isn't built any better or worse than any import vehicle. My father bought a 1988 Dodge Dakota and drive it to work 70+ miles each way everyday to and from work. Over 200,000 miles later, we have replaced the brakes, exhaust, one valve cover gasket and a battery. That's it. And it's American made.

My friend bought a Honda Prelude or something one day and had all sorts of Transmission failures and problems ranging from squeaks, cracks, rattles, water/air leaks...everything.

I bought a Ford Focus and had the transmission blow up. It was built incorrectly.

I bought a Ford Ranger and had no problems but one Torsion Bar.

I have a Nissan Skyline and have no problems.

It's all how you take care of what you have, not WHO made it.

"You take care of it, and it'll take care of you." That's my quote.

very excellent point adam. I was gonna say something about the same situation but I figured why bother, like talking physics to a preschooler.

karrbass4life 02-16-2005 10:44 AM

I buy my products based upon cash, quality of product, and reviews. Like lets say i owned a lowered Ranger, for tires I would choose the Toyo's. One they are well built and hold up wonderfully, Two they are sticky, Three great customer feed-back, Four introduce new sized for different rims each year (they now make a MT tire that fits on a 24" rim), and they got a lot of bang for the buck. Im getting Cooper on my ride for one reason, i know a tire dealer owner, who's hooking me up for cost.

and as far as my next vechile goes, unless i can't get a Mustang GT, a Honda Prelude (Japanese), or BMW M3 e36 (German) will be next in line.

And funny thing is My 4.0L in my ranger is built in Germany I guess im un-American.

D. 02-16-2005 10:16 PM

I use 255/55/17 tires. Theres 2 tires of the same size for a 17inch wheel. I must change wheel size to attain the same tire diameter or stick with the 2 current manufactured tires in the size above.

Fortunate for myself, one of the tires is an RS/A, contrare to popular belief, they hookup VERY good ( those on here that have driven my truck can speak for it ) .

I live in Buffalo, anyone ever hear of Bethlehem Steel corp? They lost market share to imported steel ( for whatever reason ) . 30,000 jobs disappeared between 1978 and 1988 alone from that one company. How bout.. ' Republic Steel '. There gone as well ( another 17,000 jobs ) .

I buy American whenever I can. I like looking at my neighbors and seeing them fed as well as myself. Folks can argue for whatever they want, where they stand or have whatever reasons they do for making their purchases.. I'll buy what I want, others will do the same.

I will note : The only Rice I'll ever own is my Honda ATV. IF Polaris actually made a quad worth a shat, I would have one. I think I can toss BMW into the ' rice ' catagory as I've had my hands on a certian 325I's engine all too often! ( POS! )

yah, i know what u mean as far as taking care of u're car the right way, or course i was implying that....if some idiot decides to rag the crap outta his car day in day out, then somethin big and bad will happen one day....

true american cars can last a long time....my chevy c10 has well over 200k miles and it still runs sometimes....key word.....that one truck has given me so many problems that i refuse to even attempt to drive it...yet its my first car ever and in extremely good condition for its age and etc, so i will keep it just for the antique value...

i was looking into buying a subaru wrx a while back....i was impressed with it so so much...the handling was great, ride quality was good, and it hauled...i know this is apples to oranges....but i talked to other owners of subarus...older ones....they told me that the company had send them coupons and offers to upgrade their cars....but they refused to...their subaru's had over 300k miles and it still drove like new...

honda and toyota have the best resale value, along with volkswagon and etc....they're in demand in this day and age...not because of their rice ability but because of their quality....my ex had a 98 civic ex coupe....very well maintained and etc...and i felt like i was driving in a car totally above the level of my truck....and i know my truck cost 5-10 thousand more....

also...BMW and Mercedes.....Ferrarri...Lambo!!! i guess i'm getting into the extreme side of the import/domestic battle...but c'mon....theres no way we can stay on top of them....

i remember that the Mercury Maurarder was touted as America's classic muscle car for the street....people were claiming that it was going to own everything....until someone found out that a honda accord with an aftermarket intake could beat the pants off of it....
