Painted my stock wheels black
I agree Cracker and appreciate you posting those pics. I've been wondering what this would look like myself b/c I don't like the chrome wheels with my grey truck. How easy are those covers to pop off and what paint did you use ?
The covers pop off real easy. just get your thing for the jack and leave the rubber tip on it and pry it open like a paint can.
I cleaned the wheels with simple green and let them dry, then i used a wire brush attachment on my drill to rough up the gray paint on the rims and washed them and dried them again.
Then i got some rustoleum(sp?) automotive primer and put a coat of that followed by 2 light coats and one heavy of Rustoleum gloss black automotive paint.
I plan on hitting them up with some mag wheel clear coat from autozone sometime this week.

I like it. i was thinking about the same thing for mine too. Im buying new tires tomorrow or the day after and I thought about painting or powdercoating the wheels. I dig them because of the Interceptor look. Ive always had a thing for steelies and cop car style in particular.
As far as it looking 'cheap', not everybody dreams of chrome rims or teflon coated wheels. I prefer the subtle look on my cars. The flashiest set of wheels i ever had on any of my cars was a set of stock 01 Mustang Bullitt wheels on my Cougar. Nobody ever accused it of being the 'cheap' route just because they werent a set of $3000 Billet wheels. I just did it because i like it. I will probably black out the stockers on the Ranger for the same reason.

i like 'em. but i also have black wheels on a white truck
so if i paint my black wheels another color its a ghetto mod since people don't sell colored wheels?
there's a difference between an opinion and being an ***, and in my opinion you crossed it. calling him out on doing a basically free mod? low

im not being an *** everyones entitled to their opinion and i believe that spray painting ones rims is a ghetto mod. Im not calling crackerstien out at all, cause the homemade tonneau cover he made a while back turned out awesome, i just cant say the same for the rims it just makes his truck look cheap.

They do look good, but I do prefer the chrome better if it was my truck. Looks kinda like mine does right now,but I have the ugly 3 spoke Mazda rims.
Actually, what I think would have looked bad *** was if you redo them and use Duplicolor Metalcast Black Chrome on them. This way the rims aren't gloss black, but they are a shiny black chrome and would look absolutely sick.

So my old Escalades look pretty ghetto huh? What about the entire paint job on the truck? Yeah, that's rattle canned too. Total paint and prep investment: $150
in your case it goes with the truck better .... i just like the ranger chromes thats all and the above comment was made a couple of weeks ago
thats a nice old school mazda ... i totally wanted one of those but xcab ... couldnt find a nice one.

Thanks. I sold the truck earlier this year after building it for 2 years. That was the finished product and my first pickup truck too.
Had I gotten the chrome Escalades,I would not have painted them. Infact, I'm not a fan of painting chrome rims. Brushed aluminum or steelies, sure, but really back to the original post at hand, I would have sold the chromies or traded for a steel set of the same rims and painted them.
But then, like him,I tend to paint things when I'm bored.
If you read Minitruckin Mag, you might recognize my truck from reader's rides section in the October 2008 issue.

I've already stated... They weren't Chromies... just plastic chrome wheel covers. Nothing looks cheaper than plastic chrome hub cap bull ****. I didn't even paint those i just took those off and painted the steelies underneath.
a ranger police interceptor would be a great idea for that truck. id love to see that happen.
Not all of them are a cover, some are actually chrome wheels. Mine happened to be covers.
Here's the covers as they sit in my attic today

Here's what the wheels look like with the older style center cap
