Soft 8's?

Its doubtful, but does anybody have any 16 inch Cragar soft 8's they want to get rid of or trade for some stock 5 spoke aluminums off an 04 FX4 around the Phoenix area?

silverbullet32 04-03-2009 11:02 AM

Reading this thread makes me want to sell my soft 8's now. Are they really that heavy and not god for northeastern weather?

Motorcraft 04-06-2009 09:32 AM

i have a set of soft 8's have had them for over a year now no rust on them, did not affect braking at all. they did cost me some City mpg but i also think my 35's helped with that. and i live in new england. i just wash the salt and grim off my truck in the winter.

They're fine for the winte rbecause they're steel. WHy do you think everyone puts snow tires on steel rims in the winter?

But they are heavy as hell, and from my experience on my truck, they were god awful.

Sure does. No problems in 5 months with stock wheels. Big problems in 2 months with steel rims. No problems so far in 3 months with aluminum Mickeys.

Same driving style.

camodown 04-06-2009 03:08 PM

yeah but it is your driving style that caused that brake job. They don't help because they are heavier but there are tons more guys running heavier wheel & tire combos for years with no problems.

I've been running streetlocks for over two years (which are heavier than soft 8s) and haven't had to change my brakes.

Getting steel wheels doesn't automatically make your brakes go bad, it is braking hard with the extra weight

03Shadowbob 04-07-2009 07:32 AM

I've had my soft 8s on for almost a year and have no problems with my breaks. Not rusting either.

I can't imagine putting bigger wheels on my truck without upgrading the front brakes and going to discs in the rear.

just having disc in the back would really help.

do you know if there is a bigger brake that rangers can get. I can't recall any

crazymikey 04-07-2009 11:13 AM

Not sure. Might be some big brake upgrades, or maybe some better calipers, but you can't go wrong just upgrading pads and rotors.

rizoss16 04-09-2009 11:01 AM

Who else has had the Soft 8s for a long period of time? I know more people on here have them? What is your experience with them as far as rusting and break problems? Couldnt you through some rustoleum spray paint on when you first get them?

Fx4wannabe01 04-09-2009 11:09 AM

You shouldn't just be asking peoples experiences with just the soft 8 style of wheel. I've been running the D window style steelies for more than 3 years now. But during those 3 years, I've done regular brake maintainence to the truck(because it needed it at 75k). I've ran 15x7 on 31's, 15x8 on 32's, and currently running 15x10 on 35's. All Steel. All D-window. No issues or any accelerated wear other than whats already on the truck(regular wear and tear).

How do brakes get hurt by running steel wheels??

*brake. not break.

I had a set of Black Soft 8's for 3 years, and I had not a single problem with them. Changed the brakes once during those 3.

Got a set of Chrome ones right now (been on around 5 months), and theres a little rust on them from where the tire shop hit the rim when they were installing the tire. I do need to change the pads again, but I dont know if Im going to blame that on the rims. The pads that are on there now have been on there for about 2 years and have been to (From central NJ) Virginia Beach once, Albany, NY twice, And probally 3 or 4 times out to Whitehall and Tamaqua, PA. So I think its just wear and tear.

If I was in the area I'd trade ya, been looking to get a set of 5 spokes for a while now.
