I've got an 01 Ranger Supercab 4x4 and was thinking of getting the Goodyear MTR's. ive read good and bad things about them and was wondering if anyone had them on their trucks and weather or not you liked them. I do mostly on-road driving but this trucks doesn't go out too much right now. It's not the everyday driver that the other Ranger is. I'm more concerned about treadwear more then anything. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

 

Goodyear is overpriced. go with kuhmo road ventures. ive got them and love them and my truck sees more road then dirt (a lot more) and they are rated for 30,000+ miles. it was either BFGs or Goodyears that i saw and they looked exactly like my tires except i have alternating lugs and my tires are $40 cheaper (per tire).

 

Why don't you buy an AMERICAN MADE tire? I get tired of all these "ricer" brands!

I have Cooper Discoverer S/T's which are a cross between and an A/T and mud terrain tire. They have been EXCELLENT on road and off.

 

people I know that have MTR tires really like them
people in the know that I know are going to buy GY MTRS for their next set of tires

if you squint real hard while looking at the screen sideways the above becomes a recommendation


they look good to me - if you like them and can get a good deal then go for it!

 

Ok I guess Ill chime in since I have a set on my rig now. I went from BFG muds to the MTRs, fyi.

Some pros:
Handle like a dream off-road!!! Mind you I have only 2wd and I was able to keep up with my buddy in his jeep with ATs, this was before I got my locker, lift, etc.

They handle fine on the road, adn balnace alot better than my BFG muds did. They do better on every surface than the BFG muds did, as I recall.

I also got to try them out in snow for the first time a few weeks ago, they handled fine, especially for 2wd with a locker (more spinning probability, than 4wd unlocked)

The sidewalls are stronger, I have put these tires through more hell than my BFGs and i have yet to get a flat or anything, I did have a blow out in my BFGs.

THEY LOOK GOOD TOO!
Cons:

THey seem to wear semi fast, I have abotu 30K on mine and about 1/2" of tread left. THey do however still perform ok offroad with less tread, much better tahn the BFGs did. They still clean really well!

Also they are EXPENSIVE!!!!

YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED WITH THEM!

* I am not trying to dog BFG muds, as I will probably buy them next b/c I dont offroad as much as I used to and they are cheaper. THen again when the time comes I may stick to what I know.

 

I have Goodyear MT/Rs and I will never buy a different set of offroad tires. they are absolutely awesome. as far as buying other brands. Most offroad tires that are "economy" have thin sidewalls, where as the goodyear MT/Rs have some of the best and thickest sidewalls of all offroad tires.

Now as far as the wear, if you drive 90% pavement then these tires arent for you. Any mud terrain tire is gonna have a short life because ofthe soft compounds they like to use. although goodyear MT/Rs are in the better group of M/Ts, the will still wear faster than an All terrain.


bottom line though, I love my tires and if I had a chance, I would put them in my bed with me while I sleep.



EDIT: also take a look into any offroad magazine and tell me what kind of tires most of the rigs are runnin.

 

my brother had them on his rubicon, the wore out after about 20k miles, very very noisy, and the lugs on the side of the tread cupped very badly. when he lifted his jeep he got another set of larger MTRs, ONLY because he got them for a steal.

i dont like them and i wouldnt buy them for any of my vehicles. im just speaking from what i have personally observed.

 

wearing out: if they only lasted 20k he probably didnt rotate them enough.

noisy: he probably didnt rotate them enough.

cupped very badly: he probably didnt rotate them enough.



I rotate my MT/Rs every thousand miles forthe best wear that I can get. they arent loud, nor are they cupping, nor are they near the end of their life. I have 10k on mine

 

we rotated his as per the owners manual that came with the rubicon that came with the MTRs stock.

if they have to be rotated every 1k so they dont get loud, wear fast, or cup, then there is a problem. rotating them as per the owners manual and rotating every 1k will make no difference on tread wear anyway.

im just offering up my experience here, not trying to argue

BUT I rotate them every 1k cause I love my tires and I care for them like they were my children. every mud tire you buy will cup, every mud tire you buy will be loud. also it was a jeep, so youre gonna hear a lot of noise anyway.


hell i dont know maybe he got duds, I always notice that factory tires do worse than the same model of tire bought at a retailer, for some reason. dont know why but thats my observation.


rotating them that often on a mud tire DOES make a difference in wear. think of it like this:

cupping comes from lack of rotation. bottom line. and once they cup they will wear faster when you rotate them.

example: take a peice of sidewalk chalk, the big ****ers. now go write on the concrete with just a corner of it making a tip sort of. now write flat with it. itll wear down quickly, now start writing with a fresh peice again on the concrete but this time rotate all the corners and tally up how long wear lasts.


also what did the manaul say? every 5000 miles?? thats my guess cause thats what my manual says and 5k is WAAAAAAAAY to long to wait to rotate mud tires.

just like snow tires theyll tell you to rotate them more often for a reason, soft compound, easy cupping and itll make em last longer.

 

im sure the MTRs are as good as any mud tire, youre definatley right that ALL mud tires need careful attention if they are going to be used primarily on the street

 

theyre not only as good as, theyre BETTER than the good majority of mud terrains. especially cause their streetability in which I would comfortably say they ARE the best.


a couple most capable mud terrains: Krawlers, boggers, TSLs, SSXs.

but take a look at those tires noise and mileage expectancy. krawlers have been known to only get 6k or so. boggers 15k IF YOURE LUCKY and about the same with the others, maybe a few thousand more.




sorry dont mean to be so persistant but I really am confident in these tires, as you can tell.

 

i do like name brand mud tires, thats for sure, personally i wouldnt run anything by interco on the street.

MTR's are horribly overpriced.. otherwise they are among the best of mud tires.
They are probably the ONLY goodyear truck tire I would ever buy.

I worked a Tire store when these first came out the were a great tire back then (2000) We have zero complant about the ride, better than the AT/s I adjusted a ton of those.

Why not look at an AT instead of an MT if you're concerned about street mileage. The AT is designed to be better on pavement than an MT and better off pavement than an all-season, right? I'm no expert, but I'd never put a set of MTs on a truck that's going to see mostly pavement. Personally I worry about running ATs w/ as much highway mileage as I do..

That's why the S/T's I have are so good -- they combine elements of both. You get more agressive traction when you need it, but good street manners.

Ask Ryan (Pinecone) -- he couldn't climb a rocky hill in 2WD with his Dueler A/T Revo's that my truck just walked up. He'd of probably made it in 4WD, but his transfer case was malfunctioning. I can only envy him his broken transfer case...at least he can fix his -- I'd have to ADD one!

Take a look at the Cooper Discover S/T's before you buy anything else, unless you just want a name on the tire that everyone will admire. This is a great and underappreciated tire that was originally designed for the Australian and South African offroad market, and then released here later.

 

johnny, not to try and outdo you but My Mt/Rs will outperform and even though they have a name, they have a tire to back up the hype.

i agree they are a little pricey but a lot of premium off road tires are! and my MT/Rs have some pretty good street manners, Id rather run them over my stock rt/s's in the street!!

 

my goodyear at/s are pretty badass...great life yet agressive tread and looks...
