New heads

yea so now i need new heads. my valves are burnt out. and cyl 5 is only recieveing 90 to 100 psi for compression at best. so gotta remove lower intake mani and remove heads.

anybody know if i have to remove the exhaust mani? and do you guys think it be more worth it to buy new reman heads or to bring mine and get them resurfaced and redone? whats more cost effective...also should i replace anything else while i have it all aprart?

A parts seller will say you must , but most real mechanics will say you'll be ok with the original bolts.
It's up to you.
I'd use the originals.

i called napa today...they said its not always better to get reman heads. that it would be better to use the heads that came off the car and get them redone. and sometimes it can be less expensive. said to bring em down and he sends them to a machinist. that way they will be the exact heads and the specs will meet what they used to be brand new. where as reman heads arnt always to specs. (spring hieght or valve hieght) what you guys think?

See what the machine shop wants for each head. Factor in the parts you need also. the machine shop near me and most of them the turn around time is not fast. I would go with reman heads they are very close to the stock original specs.

Just did mine and it wasn't too bad, just alot of time. Check out Dover cylinder head. A local ford dealer uses them for reman heads so I wasn't concerned about the quality. The web page is running a special on 3.0 head kit. Comes complete with gaskets and bolts for $350. I ran down and picked them up and installed the next day. I think you can get free shipping is purchased on eBay.

I was able to pick them up because they are local. I had a bad head gasket. Took my heads to a machine shop and it would have been $150 to machine them plus $100 for the gasket set. The machine shop told me they needed a valve job and would cost me more than remanufactured heads. My father works at dealership and they directed me to Dover. Wish I had known about it before paying to have the heads checked. A complete gasket set comes with the heads which was a surprise because from the description I thought it was only head gaskets

i was told about this shop in hartford or to take em to NAPA. i figured i take em to napa just to see approx how much it would cost and go from there. but i will give the somersville machine shop a call and ask them as well.
the dover heads have the correct spring height and proper valve clearances?

you notice a big difference when you put new ones on? i just got finished taking the lower intake off. next to take the rockers and pushers off then the heads. thinking about replacing the drivers side rockers at least cylinder 4 and 5 because i took them off last weekend to do some diagnosis and didnt kno that they go to certain valves. if they dont indicate wether the rockers are exhaust or intake ill prob just replace em to be certain everything will be ok.

I just bought the truck. It ran rough and threw at least 6 codes. I thought it was due to the head gaskets until the machine shop pointed out the valves and how bad they were recessed (also ended up cracked after cleaned up). The heads made a huge difference. Don't really know for sure whether it was the valves or heads themselves. Sorry about the pushrods. I had read to keep track of them. Mine showed some wear but didn't replace any. No codes yet and had previously come up within miles of resetting.
Good luck!!

dam. mine was only showing one misfire code. been replacing things piece by piece to see if it was the problem and now were down to mechanical issues. never noticed any misfire but the code pops up every once in while.
